Eastern & Oriental Express, Singapore

The Eastern & Oriental Express of Belmond Collection, is a luxurious train that operates 4 days, 2,000-km journey from Bangkok to Singapore via the Malay Peninsula (or vice versa), with stops at the Bridge on the River Kwai and Penang. The voyage recreates the golden age of rail travel, of colonial-style and opulence but its philosophy is best expressed by its exterior artwork called ‘The Koi Pond’ which depicts the joy of travel, movement and the coming together of friends and family.

Inside, there are 40 cabins in four categories. Accommodations are compact but more than serviceable, with two twin beds that fold up during the day and a private shower. The rooms are decorated with rich fabrics and inlaid wood. Fresh fruit and orchids are arranged on the windowsill. Life aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express follows a basic schedule: an early breakfast followed by some off-train excursions, lunch and traveling in the afternoon, then a formal dinner.

Some of the best seats on the Eastern & Oriental Express are in the open-air observation car, which has uninterrupted views of the countryside and handy proximity to the bar. Many of the passengers gather here in the afternoons to enjoy the scenery and socialize, continuing during the meals where a new seating plan is made to encourage conversation among the guests. The result is that by the end of the journey, you would have possibly met all of the 60-odd travellers on board.
