Suján Sher Bagh: Luxury Wildlife Camp in Rajasthan

Suján Sher Bagh is a luxurious boutique tented camp, set on the outskirts of Ranthambhore National Park. Owned by Jaisal Singh and Anjali, this 1920s style setup is reminiscent of the camps that followed the Maharaja’s hunting entourage. Designed by Anjali, who holds degrees from London’s Central Saint Martins, the camp is furnished with goods specially made in India by local Indian artisans. The result is that staying here provides a unique and authentic local experience.

Situated within ten minutes’ drive from the national park, Suján Sher Bagh comprises of just 12 luxurious tents. All are air-conditioned and have a spacious bedroom with bespoke accessories by Halcyon Days, veranda and butler service. Dining menu incorporates dishes local to the area and prepared with homegrown ingredients by experienced chefs. Expect elegant service from staff who come from local villages and are trained in-house at the Suján School of Hospitality.

Facilities at Sher Bagh include a pool with sun loungers and a Suján Spa offering massages. Guests can take half-day game drives to Ranthambore National Park, home to the Indian tiger, as well as leopards, sambar deer, sloth bears and Indian wild boar. Nearby is the 900AD hilltop Ranthambhore Fort with views over the Padam Talau (lake). Birdwatchers can see over 350 species of birds or take jeep excursions to Soorwal Lake to view waders, ducks and various migratory birds.

Stay Suján Sher Bagh comprises of just 12 air-conditioned tents. Each luxurious white canvas tent with beautifully embroidered interiors is spacious in size and furnished with bespoke Edwardian style furniture, comfortable beds draped in fine cotton sheets and enormous bathrooms with hot showers. The two grand suites; Pukka Sahib Suite and Royal Suite come with their own private gardens with an alfresco Jacuzzi or a beautiful pool overlooking the open grounds.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Suján Sher Bagh but there are no specific facilities available for children. Children may be accommodated in their parent’s bedroom for an extra charge but there is no babysitting service. This place is more suited to older children who love the outdoors, wildlife and nature. The expert staff are happy to keep kids busy with block-printing lessons and short drives around the camp boundaries.

Dine Dining at Sher Bagh is a gourmet affair with meals cooked by Relais and Chateaux trained chefs with fresh ingredients from their own organic garden. The pre-safari breakfast and 3-course lunches are Anglo-Indian and European style and served in the dining tent, while traditional Indian dinners cooked on outdoor clay ovens are served al fresco within a romantic lantern-lit setting. There is a small bar offering a range of beers, wines and spirits.

Relax Facilities at Sher Bagh include a pool with sun loungers and a small tented spa where full-time male and female masseurs offer aromatherapy massages as well as shoulder, hand and foot, or head massages. During the free time, guests can take Informal cooking classes, take leisurely walks in the surrounds with a local conservationist or rest on a charpoy amidst the jungle while listening to the sounds of chirping birds.

Experience Ranthambhore National Park lies at the junction of two iconic hill ranges, the Aravalli and the Vindhyas. It is one of the finest places in the world to encounter wild tigers. Guests at Sher Bagh can take a half-day game drive into the park to see the tiger, leopard, bear and a variety of wildlife that thrives here. Birdwatchers flock to the area for its abundant birdlife. Nearby interesting sites include Ranthambhore Fort and the Surwal Lake that you can explore on horseback.
