The Sofitel Wanda Chengdu is a five-star high-rise hotel, set in the heart of Chengdu, Sichuan province in southwestern China. Built in 2003, it has a funky curved exterior (veined in purple neon) that is a standout feature of the city’s colourful skyline. The cavernous marble lobby is strewn with giant artworks, Asian-inspired sculptures and displays of wild orchids. Located on the banks of the Funan River the Sofitel is just a 15-minute walk from the central city area of Chengdu.
The French managed Sofitel Wanda Chengdu features 262 rooms and suites. All are elegantly designed using modern décor and have city or river views. There is a Club Floor for those wanting the intimacy of a Club Lounge or enjoy its various dining options offering Western, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. Set under a high, vaulted skylight is an indoor lap pool, lined with potted ferns and chunky day chairs. The large Champs Elysées Club spa with toffee-coloured mosaic walls features a sauna, a hot tub and a well-equipped gym.
A short walk along the river from Sofitel Wanda Chengdu is Qingyang Palace, a lavishly decorated Taoist temple. Here you can relax with a cup of green tea and watch monks praying at the Two Immortals Monastery. For lunch, check out the food stalls, restaurants and bars on Jinli Street, a shopping precinct modelled after a dynastic-era street in ancient China. In the evening, visit a music venue on the 21st floor of the Poly Centre, where DJs or live bands play every night.

When to go Chengdu weather is mild and humid all year round, featuring four clear-cut seasons – long and warm spring, short and sultry summer, cool and rainy autumn, cold and foggy winter. The distinctive characteristic of Chengdu weather is foggy and humid, so there are fewer hours of sunlight per day, and the summer is hotter and the winter is colder than the temperature shows. The rainy season is usually in July and August, with occasional storms. Thus, the best time to visit Chengdu is March to June and September to November.
