Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu is a stylish high-rise hotel, towering over tiny ancient pagodas and office buildings. Located in the history-rich city of Chengdu, and close to picturesque rivers, grand bridges and streets full of hibiscus flowers and gingko trees, it forms a good base from which to visit the Panda Research Centre. Though decadent in its outward form, it reserves a homely atmosphere with ever smiling and welcoming staff.
The Shangri-la Chengdu resort is a large property with 593 guest rooms that are soothing and spacious, tastefully decorated with sophisticated oriental-style fittings. Marbled bathrooms are large, with a separate tub and shower cubicle. Located beside the Jiajiang River, our room had a spectacular view of the Hejiang Pavilion and the beautiful garden along the riverside where the locals practice Tai Chi in the morning.
In the surrounds of Jinjiang district and Shangri-la Chengdu are picturesque paths and green spaces to explore at leisure. Chengdu is a historical city that dates back to 2,400 years and has a number of historical sites, including temple of Wuhouci, located in the southern suburb. Not far is the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre. We saw the elegant-looking black-neck cranes, black and white swans leisurely cruising in the tranquil lake and peacocks demonstrating their majestic tail feathers on the lawns. The Pandas… were huge, like a Japanese sumo and ready for a fight.
