La Villa Battambang - Heritage Luxury in Battambang, Cambodia

La Villa is a boutique hotel, set near the heart of Battambang’s city centre, in northwest Cambodia. Built by a wealthy local tradesman in the 1930s, this colonial townhouse went into disrepair during the Khmer rouge era. Now fully refurbished, it is swathed in Old World charm; antique armoires, four-poster beds, richly patterned floor tiles and vintage ceiling lamps fill the space, albeit with some modern luxuries for the discerning traveller.

Once a family home, La Villa Battambang now has 7 guestrooms. All are simply but elegantly furnished with original tiled floors, antique four-poster beds, art deco writing tables and modern ensuite bathrooms. There is a beautiful swimming pool, set at the back of the hotel surrounded by a fruit laden garden with a bar to keep you hydrated. The hotel’s restaurant continues the art deco theme and spills outside, so guests can eat inside or on candlelit tables in the garden.

Sitting close to the banks of the Sanker River, guests at La Villa can easily take a boat to the other side of the river and explore the Heritage Protection Area, populated by about 800 historical buildings, the largest collection in the country. There is a roughly 150-year-old Chinese temple, nearby is Psar Nath, the city’s main market and within walking distance are new and upcoming galleries with paintings by some of the country’s most famous artists.

Experience Battambang, Cambodia's second largest city has a unique small-town charm and makes for a great short tour. La Villa Battambang is located within easy walking distance of the city centre and is a good base to explore the city and the surrounding area. It’s known for colonial buildings such as Sala Khaet, the former Governor’s Residence and Battambang Provincial Museum, which showcases artefacts from local Khmer temples. The surrounding countryside offers good cycling opportunities.

Location Located within fertile plains, Battambang is officially Cambodia's second city. It sits 40km west of Tonle Sap Lake and is less than a 3-hour drive from Siem Reap.

Getting there Getting to Battambang is relatively easy and just a 3-hour drive from Siem Reap and a scenic 5 hours from Phnom Penh.

When to go Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
