Sun Peninsula Resort: Luxury Beachfront Resort in Vietnam

Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam is a luxury hillside resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is located on a secluded private bay of the Son Tra Peninsula, near the ancient town of Hoi An. Its design – according to its architect Bill Bensley, that TIME magazine calls as “the king of exotic luxury resorts” – was inspired from Vietnam’s imperial tombs, temples and palaces.

The result is a one-of-a-kind, whimsical realm spread across four levels—Heaven being the highest, down to Sky, Earth and then Sea, each offering privacy and space. Each level can be easily accessed by buggy or via the resort's funicular lift. The resort has spacious Classic Rooms in striking contemporary design with an expansive private balcony with ocean views. And, there are suites, penthouses and luxury villas. All rooms have Vietnamese-inspired décor and expansive views of the East Vietnam Sea.

Dining is a highlight with two bars and three restaurants, including Citron, which boasts private dining booths that seem to float over the hillside offering stunning views. There is a well-equipped gym, a spa with a sauna and steam room, set around a lagoon. Racket sports including badminton and tennis. The Kid's Club has various craft and outdoor activities keeping with its family friendly atmosphere.

Experience The resort is filled with activities for both adults and children. At the Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula, you can join the morning tai chi class or take a relaxing stroll along the 700-meter private beach. During the day, go trekking in the surrounding forest or Kayaking on the East Sea. In the surrounds, explore Hoi An known for its speciality restaurants and tailors, or visit the ancient My Son.

One More Thing As the story goes, Mr Bensley, the resort’s architect was too busy to take on the project when Mr Lam, the Vietnamese developer, first approached him. Mr Lam returned the next year and finding him still busy, invited Bensley to this spectacular bay on the edge of primeval forest.

When Mr Bensley saw the Danang Bay, “It was that singular ‘wow’ moment” he writes, “I jumped naked from those smooth giant boulders into the sea, then swam back ashore and said, ‘I’ll do it.’ It took another 10 years to realise Mr Lam’s vision and Bensley’s dream. But, when someone can take a decision like that, you know, it can never go wrong.

Location Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is nestled in a secluded private bay of the Son Tra Peninsula, on the central coast of Vietnam. It is about 45 minutes from the world’s heritage town Hoi An.

Getting There Take a 15-hour international flight via Dubai to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The major nearby airport is Da Nang International Airport (DAD). There are daily one-hour flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Most hotels in Da Nang and Hoi An provide a pick-up service. IH Danang is about 20-minute drive away.

When to go The best time to visit Vietnam is from November to March, when it is warm and dry in the South but begins to get cooler as you travel north of Nha Trang. From April or May to October, summer monsoon brings hot, humid weather except in the mountains up north. A slight break in monsoon during July and August makes it the second-high season in the South but unpredictable typhoons can hit central and northern Vietnam. May, June and September are usually the quietest months.
