Negombo to Malé – 14 days

Expedition Overview

Embark on a 14-day tour through Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Start in Negombo, Sri Lanka, enjoying local hospitality before heading to Kandy to explore Ayurvedic traditions and the Temple of the Tooth. Experience sustainable tourism and community engagement at the Sthree Craft Shop and Café, and discover the stunning landscapes of the Ella area from the AMBA estate. Learn about tea production and enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan cooking class.

The adventure continues with a wildlife safari in Udawalawe National Park, including a visit to the Elephant Transit Home. Then, fly to Malé and board a Dhoni boat to explore the South Malé and Felidhu atolls. Spend five days snorkelling, island hopping, and immersing in the vibrant marine life of the Maldives. Conclude the journey with a return to Malé, filled with unforgettable experiences and memories.

Negombo

Arrive in Negombo at your leisure with no planned activities until the evening. At the welcome meeting, you'll get a chance to meet your CEO and fellow travellers, possibly joining them for a local meal afterward.

DAY 2

Kandy

Journey to Kandy by private vehicle, stopping to visit a spice plantation where you'll interact with Ayurveda students and learn about medicinal herbs. Enjoy a delicious Sri Lankan lunch at the G Adventures-supported Sthree Craft Shop and Café, a social enterprise benefiting local women and disabled youth. Later, explore the Temple of the Tooth, a significant Buddhist site housing a relic of Buddha. Optional Activities: Kandyan Cultural Dance

DAY 4

Nuwara Eliya

Travel from Kandy to the historic town of Nuwara Eliya and enjoy free time. Continue to the lush Ella area, spending two nights at the G Adventures-supported AMBA estate, an organic farm, and guest house that provides local communities with meaningful employment opportunities and fair wages.

DAY 5

Nuwara Eliya

Start your day with a tour of the tea plantation, learning about one of the nation's major exports and tasting fresh tea. Spend your free time soaking in the stunning scenery, optionally hiking to Ella Rock, or exploring Ella town by tuk-tuk. Enjoy a cooking demonstration of traditional Sri Lankan dishes in the evening.

DAY 6

Udawalawe National Park

After breakfast at Amba Estate, journey to Udawalawe National Park. Visit the Elephant Transit home and enjoy an afternoon wildlife safari. End the day at a lakeside tented camp on the National Park's boundary, complete with a BBQ dinner around the campfire.

DAY 7

Unawatuna

Post breakfast, journey from Udawalawe to Galle for a tour of the fort and city, rich in Portuguese and Dutch history. Later, head to the coastal city of Unawatuna.

DAY 8

South Male Atoll

Start your day with a flight to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Transfer to South Malé Atoll and embark on a voyage of discovery aboard a converted Maldivian fishing boat. The journey takes you through the Vaadhoo Canal to a nearby island, probably Guraidhoo, where you'll moor for your first night on board.

DAY 9

Felidhu Atholhu

Over the next five days, journey around the South Malé and Felidhu atolls, hopping off to explore stunning islands and sandbars. Take the opportunity to snorkel amidst shipwrecks and reefs, and savour the breathtaking, uninhabited beaches of Bodu Moro Island, a perfect backdrop for memorable photos. On board the dhoni, indulge in leisure activities at your own pace - whether it's basking on the sundeck absorbing the panoramic vistas, diving into a good book, or engaging in convivial interactions with other travellers over delectable local seafood delicacies. Offshore, seize the chance to swim and snorkel around the phenomenal marine life of the Maldives, about twice daily. With shallow islands and spectacular coral reefs forming an essential habitat for a variety of tropical fish, you can expect encounters with turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, and octopuses.
