Ubud, Flores Villages & Komodo Dragons

Ubud to Jimbaran (South Bali) – 13 days

Begin in Ubud with an easy arrival, then settle into Bali’s cultural rhythm with the Sacred Monkey Forest, a stroll through the town centre, and an evening of dinner and traditional performance. Continue inland for a melukat purification ritual at Tirta Empul, Kintamani’s views over Mount Batur, and sacred Besakih on Mount Agung’s slopes. Travel via Mengwi’s Taman Ayun, the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces, and Ulun Danu Beratan on Lake Beratan before descending to South Bali. A sunset visit to Uluwatu and the hypnotic Kecak dance completes Bali’s classic highlights.

Fly onwards to Flores for a deeper, more remote Indonesia. Travel overland through weaving villages, traditional houses, markets and hot springs, and rise before dawn for Kelimutu’s extraordinary three-coloured crater lakes. Continue across the highlands to Ruteng and on to Labuan Bajo, then cruise into Komodo National Park: trek on Rinca and Komodo to see Komodo dragons with rangers, snorkel at Pink Beach, and overnight on board. Return to Bali via Labuan Bajo’s market and Batu Cermin cave, then depart.

Highlights

UBUD CULTURAL TOUR: Settle into Bali’s creative heart with a carefully paced introduction to Ubud’s atmosphere and traditions. Walk through the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where ancient temples sit within a living forest and macaques roam freely among towering trees. Continue into Ubud’s centre for time among art shops, boutiques and market lanes—ideal for browsing crafts, textiles and small galleries. Finish the day with dinner and a traditional dance performance (schedule permitting), offering a vivid first taste of Balinese storytelling, music and costume.

TIRTA EMPUL PURIFICATION CEREMONY: Experience Bali’s spiritual side with a guided visit to Tirta Empul, home to sacred springs used for the melukat purification ritual. Your guide explains the etiquette and sequence so you can observe or participate respectfully, in line with temple regulations. Continue to Kintamani for panoramic views over Mount Batur and its volcanic landscape, then visit Besakih—the revered “Mother Temple” on Mount Agung’s slopes. Together, these sites reveal how faith, ritual and landscape remain deeply intertwined in daily Balinese life.

KELIMUTU THREE COLOURED LAKES TOUR: Fly to Flores and travel into its highlands for one of Indonesia’s most dramatic dawn experiences: Kelimutu’s three crater lakes, famous for colours that can shift unpredictably due to volcanic gases and minerals. Arrive before sunrise to watch the changing light reveal surreal hues across the caldera. Continue overland through local markets and fertile valleys, with stops such as the Soa hot springs for a restorative break. This stretch of the journey showcases Flores’ quieter, more remote character—scenic drives, traditional villages, and a strong sense of place.

KOMODO DRAGON TOUR: Cruise into Komodo National Park for ranger-led walks on Rinca and Komodo Islands in search of Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Learn about the park’s unique ecology and follow local safety protocols as you trek through dry forests and open savannah. Between island visits, enjoy time on the water with lunch served onboard and a snorkelling stop at Pink Beach, known for clear seas and vibrant marine life. An overnight on the boat adds an unforgettable dimension—fall asleep to calm waters and wake up surrounded by islands.

DAY 1

Ubud

Arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport and meet our representative in the arrivals hall. Transfer inland to Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart, where rice fields, galleries and temple-lined lanes set a calmer pace than the coast. Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure to recover from your flight. If you feel like exploring, take a gentle walk along Ubud’s backstreets, browse nearby craft shops, or settle into a café for your first taste of Balinese coffee. Your guide can suggest simple options depending on your arrival time, or you may prefer an early night so you’re refreshed for tomorrow’s touring.

Accommodation spans Deluxe Rooms alongside wooden villa-style units, blending traditional detailing with practical modern comforts; it’s well suited to couples and small families who want space, privacy and an easy Ubud base. The property is typically described as a short drive from central Ubud, with some services (such as a shuttle) often offered depending on schedule.

DAY 5

JIMBARAN BAY

After breakfast, travel to the Bukit Peninsula for Uluwatu Temple, dramatically perched on sea cliffs above the Indian Ocean. Walk the temple pathways and viewpoints to take in the expansive coastal scenery, with time for photographs as the light softens later in the day. Monkeys are common around the site, so keep sunglasses and loose items secure. In the late afternoon, take your seat for the Kecak dance performance (subject to schedule), a powerful show driven by rhythmic chanting and stylised movement as the story unfolds against a sunset backdrop. After the performance, return by private transfer to your South Bali hotel for a free evening.

KELIMUTU CRATER LAKES ECO LODGE

Kelimutu Eco Lodge (often listed as Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge) is one of the most comfortable bases in Moni, well positioned for the pre-dawn departure to Kelimutu’s three-coloured crater lakes. It sits in a quiet, green setting, giving you a restful night before the early start and an easy return for breakfast afterwards.

Accommodation is in simple, lodge-style rooms—some in private cottages—with practical comforts suited to a remote area: en-suite bathrooms, hot water, and mosquito nets, plus balconies/verandas on many rooms for fresh air and views. Air-conditioning is generally not a feature here, reflecting the cooler highland climate and eco-lodge style.

Facilities are centred on ease and atmosphere: a restaurant for hearty meals, Wi-Fi in public areas, and helpful services such as laundry and (where arranged) transfers. It’s a grounded, nature-first stay—exactly what you want for Kelimutu.

Resort

DAY 7

BAJAWA

Start before dawn for one of Flores’ great natural sights: the three-coloured lakes of Kelimutu. From the viewpoint, watch first light reveal crater lakes whose colours can shift unpredictably due to volcanic gases and mineral content—an extraordinary, ever-changing landscape. Return to your lodge for breakfast, then depart for Bajawa, a scenic drive across central Flores. Along the way, pause at Nduria fruit market for a look at local produce, then stop at the Soa hot springs to stretch your legs and enjoy the warm waters. Arrive in Bajawa for check-in at Virgo JJ (or similar). Dinner is served at the hotel. This is a very full day with early start and long road time.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

HOTEL VIRGO JJ BAJAWA

Hotel Virgo JJ (often listed as JJ Virgo Hotel) is a straightforward, town-centre base in Bajawa, well placed for an overnight between visits to villages such as Bena and the wider Ngada highlands. It’s valued mainly for practicality—easy access, friendly service, and a comfortable stop on a long overland route.

Rooms are simple and functional rather than boutique, with en-suite bathrooms and the basics you need for a good night’s rest. Reviews commonly highlight cleanliness and helpful staff; don’t expect resort frills—this is a sensible Flores staging point.

Facilities typically include Wi-Fi, on-site dining/restaurant service, and practical extras such as parking and luggage support—useful when you’re moving early the next morning. Its strength is reliability in a remote region where hotel standards can vary.

Resort

DAY 8

RUTENG

After breakfast, visit Bena, a remarkable megalithic village where ancestral traditions and distinctive house forms are still preserved, set against mountain scenery. Continue onwards to Ruteng, stopping en route in Aimere Village to see the traditional production of palm wine, a long-standing local craft. Later, visit Ranameze Lake, a quiet, photogenic spot surrounded by forest, ideal for a gentle walk and photographs. Arrive in Ruteng in the late afternoon, check in to Ara Garden Inn Hotel (or similar), and enjoy dinner. Expect a full day of driving with breaks and cultural stops.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Hotel Options:
Resort

ARA GARDEN INN RUTENG

Ara Garden Inn is an eco-friendly, garden-led retreat in Ruteng, West Flores, set on the slopes of Mount Mandosawu—a peaceful base that feels noticeably rural and cool compared with the coast. The property is known for its tranquil setting, with landscaped grounds and a nature-forward atmosphere that suits an overnight between Flores’ long driving days.

Accommodation is lodge-style and unfussy, designed for comfort rather than frills, with rooms arranged around the gardens and terrace areas. Expect a relaxed, intimate feel—more like a small sanctuary than a standard town hotel—well matched to Ruteng’s slower rhythm.

Facilities lean towards wellbeing: the inn highlights a riverside yoga studio, spa services, and calm outdoor spaces for downtime. It’s a good choice when you want quiet evenings, fresh air, and a restorative stop before continuing across Flores.

DAY 9

LABUANBAJO

After breakfast, visit Ruteng Pu’u, a traditional village known for its compang—a circular stone platform used for ceremonies and ritual offerings—alongside distinctive Manggarai-style houses. Continue west towards Labuan Bajo, pausing at Cancar (Perang) to see the region’s picturesque rice terraces and viewpoints, where the patchwork landscape creates striking patterns across the hillsides. Arrive in Labuan Bajo mid-afternoon and check in at Puri Sari Beach Hotel (or similar). The remainder of the day is free to relax by the sea, enjoy sunset views over the harbour, or prepare for tomorrow’s early start. Lunch and dinner are included today.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

It’s known for its calm setting, with sunset views over the water and a laid-back, resort-like feel rather than a town hotel atmosphere.

The hotel is relatively intimate, with around 21 rooms, typically arranged with private balconies/terraces overlooking the gardens. Rooms are simple but comfortable for Flores standards, with practical essentials such as air-conditioning and hot-water showers, making it a dependable base between boat days.

It works particularly well for a restful stop where you can slow down, enjoy the sea air, and keep logistics smooth for airport and harbour transfers.

AC CABIN BOAT KOMODO CRUISE

An AC cabin boat in Komodo (often a traditional wooden phinisi style) is designed for comfortable, overnight cruising between Labuan Bajo and the national park islands. Boats commonly used on this route include vessels such as MV Nalorina and MV Latanza/Latansa (or similar), chosen for simple comfort and practical layouts for short liveaboard trips.

Cabins are typically air-conditioned, with bunk/double bed configurations; many boats advertise private bathrooms (hot/cold shower), while some “shared tour” styles may have shared facilities depending on cabin type—your final cabin set-up is confirmed against the specific boat allocated.

Onboard life is straightforward and sociable: a dining area, shaded lounge and sun deck for island views, with meals served during the cruise. The format suits early starts for ranger-led Komodo walks and time on the water for swimming/snorkelling stops (conditions permitting).

DAY 11

LABUANBAJO

After breakfast onboard, set out for another guided trek, heading towards Banunggulung for a further opportunity to see Komodo dragons and learn more about the park’s unique ecology from the local rangers. Return to the boat and cruise onwards, stopping at Misa Island to observe daily life in a small island community and gain insight into the rhythms of the Flores archipelago beyond the main tourist routes. Continue back to Labuan Bajo in the afternoon, disembark, and check in once more at Puri Sari Beach Hotel (or similar). Dinner is included, with the evening free to rest.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

TRIP STYLE, GROUP & SUPPORT TEAM: This is a guided small-group journey combining Bali’s classic cultural highlights with a deeper, more remote extension through Flores and Komodo National Park. We run the smallest groups in the industry, with an exceptionally low guest-to-guide ratio, for a more personal, low-impact travel style and access to quieter, less-trafficked places—often translating into closer, more natural wildlife moments where nature is part of the journey. Expect an easy overall pace, balanced by a few early starts (Uluwatu/Kecak timing; Kelimutu pre-dawn; Komodo park days) and longer driving days in Flores. You’ll be supported by expert local guides, professional drivers, and park rangers/boat crew for Komodo.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS: Accommodation is in comfortable, locally rated hotels in Bali, with simple, characterful lodging in parts of Flores, plus one night on board during the Komodo cruise. Rooms are typically twin/double on a sharing basis; single rooms are available with a supplement, subject to availability (note: single availability can be more limited in Flores).
Meals are as per the itinerary: Bali includes breakfast daily plus selected lunches/dinners; in Flores and Komodo you are generally on a more inclusive basis with B/L/D on touring/cruise days. Dietary needs can usually be accommodated with notice, though options may be simpler in more remote areas. Drink sealed bottled water or approved filtered water.

TRANSPORT, TRANSFERS & EXPERIENCES: Transport combines private road transfers with two domestic flights (Bali → Maumere; Labuan Bajo → Denpasar) and a motor boat with overnight for Komodo National Park. Flores involves scenic but slower roads and mountainous terrain—journey times can be longer than distances suggest.

Key included experiences: Ubud Monkey Forest, Tirta Empul purification (observe/participate as preferred), Kintamani views, Besakih, Taman Ayun (Mengwi), Jatiluwih, Ulun Danu Beratan, Uluwatu Temple and Kecak dance (schedule permitting), Flores weaving villages/traditional houses, Kelimutu’s three-coloured lakes at sunrise, megalithic villages and local markets, and ranger-led Komodo dragon treks on Rinca/Komodo, plus snorkelling/swimming at Pink Beach.

ALTITUDE, HEALTH & SAFETY: Altitude is not extreme (Bali highlands and Flores viewpoints can feel cooler rather than high-risk), but there are pre-dawn starts and a fair amount of driving in Flores—good sleep and hydration matter. In Komodo National Park, safety is ranger-led: keep close to the group, follow instructions, and never approach wildlife. Snorkelling/swimming is weather-dependent; life jackets are typically available. Seas can be choppy at times—pack motion-sickness tablets if you’re prone. Your guides operate with vetted suppliers, and will coordinate local medical support if required.

MONEY ON TOUR: SPENDING & GRATUITIES: Indonesia uses Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Cards are accepted in many Bali hotels/restaurants; in Flores, cash is essential for small purchases. Budget for meals not included in Bali, drinks, snacks, personal shopping, and any optional extras.

Tipping is discretionary but appreciated. A practical approach is to tip guides and drivers at the end of each service segment (Bali / Flores), with small tips for boat crew and park rangers during the Komodo cruise.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS & PRACTICALITIES: Passports & visas: UK travellers need a visa for Indonesia; many use a 30-day Visa on Arrival or e-VOA (check passport validity requirements before travel).

Arrival formalities: Complete Indonesia’s digital arrival declaration (“All Indonesia”) where required/used for arrival processing.

Bali tourist levy: Bali applies a IDR 150,000 foreign tourist levy (one-time per visit).

Baggage: Pack light and use a soft duffel where possible—domestic flights and boats often have stricter baggage handling/space. Keep essentials in a daypack for boat and flight days.
Climate: Tropical year-round; expect humidity in lowlands, cooler evenings in highlands (Kintamani/Kelimutu).

Insurance: Essential—must cover medical care, domestic flight disruption, snorkelling/swimming, and expedition-style operations in Flores/Komodo.
