Kulu Safaris offers tailor-made, mobile tents, on the borders of the Uda Walawe and Yala National Parks, in southern Sri Lanka. A dream project by four passionate locals, Kulu Safaris aims to showcase Sri Lanka's diversity and breath-taking flora and fauna, experienced through their childhood years. Rotating between Uda Walawe and Yala National Parks, according to the time of the year, you’ll see elephant herds, sloth bears, wild buffalo and the prowling leopards.
Accommodation at the Kulu Safaris is mostly in custom-made deluxe canvas tents. These are on raised wooden platforms and come with comfortable queen size beds, ensuite bathrooms and open veranda with camp chairs. There are also two physical two-level buildings with one upstairs room the other downstairs. Some tents have air-conditioning and some are open aired options. All rooms are fully with comfortable beds draped in mosquito nets, lighting, bathrooms and outdoor seating.
Dining at Kulu Safaris is customised to individual taste and served in the dining tent or al fresco in the shade of the trees. Guests have access to a specially adapted 4WD vehicle for unlimited game drives, tracker and naturalist. Nature lovers including families with children are encouraged to discuss your wildlife interests in advance so that Kulu guides can customise your routes where you are more likely to see your favourite animals. A minimum two nights stay is recommended.
Amenities
Stay Kulu Safaris consists of five imported, waterproof, canvas tents. Each are set on wooden platforms, raised above ground and occupying 18 sqm space. All are air-conditioned and furnished with queen size or twin beds, with dressing table, luggage rack and ensuite bathrooms with modern facilities. A private veranda on the deck has camp chairs and hammocks to enjoy the birdlife in the surrounding jungle.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Kulu Safaris. There is a Family Tent that can sleep 2 adults and 3 children, and the other tents can each fit an extra bed for a child. There are no specific facilities available for children but the young explorers will enjoy the wildlife and open spaces.
Dine Facilities at the Kulu Safaris include the dining tent but meals can be had at the place of your own choosing. The inhouse chef will consult with you about your choice and prepare meals with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast is served after the morning game drive and may include fresh fruits, pancakes, omelettes, and optional Sri Lankan breakfast. Lunch and dinner are more elaborate, the later lit by flaming torches. The bar offers a choice of local and international beverages.
Relax Guests at the Kulu Safari spend the afternoons, in between the game drives, relaxing in hammocks strung between the trees. Others like to take leisurely walks to enjoy the local flora and birdlife. Guests can relax in the living room or take siesta in your air-conditioned tent.
Experience Guests at the Kulu Safari will enjoy two daily game drives to Yala National Park, which has a variety of ecosystems ranging from monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands and is home to one of the highest densities of leopard in the world. Other wildlife here includes mugger crocodiles, elephants, sloth bears, sambars and a variety of birds including the Crested Serpent Eagle, the White Bellied Sea Eagle, Lesser Flamingoes, Pelicans, Spoonbills and Painted Storks.
Location Depending on the time of year, your safari will take place in Udawalawe National Park (central southwest), Yala National Park (on the southeast coast) or Wilpattu National Park (on the northwest coast).
Getting there Fly to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. It takes approximately 7-hours to drive from the airport to each of the parks.
When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
