Coco Tangalla: Boutique Beachfront Retreat in Sri Lanka

Coco Tangalla is a chic, colonial-era villa, perched on a small bluff near Tangalle, on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Built in 1910, this beach house has been restored to a luxurious standard by British expat Tim Jacobson of Manor House Concepts. Tim’s wide knowledge of the area, made him select this undisturbed southern tip of Sri Lanka where the wide sandy beaches and cool sea breezes make for easy living. Now fully refurbished, this exclusive villa offers a perfect base on the South Coast.

Accommodation at the Coco Tangalla comprises of just six individually-designed, air-conditioned suites. All are simple but stylishly decorated with a mixture of modern and antique ebony furniture. The black and white décor runs through the house, creating a nostalgic colonial ambience. The house staff meets every need and a dedicated chef prepared delicious Sri Lankan and Western dishes, served in the open sided garden pavilion overlooking the sea.

Resting places around Coco Tangalla include an ambalama, where you can sit, lounge and read or soak yourself in the infinity pool, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Guests can enjoy swimming in the sea and snorkelling, near The Last House, its sister property which is 10 minutes away in Tangalle bay. One day, take a short trip to the Mulkirigala Caves to see the remarkable temple and monastery carved out of a large and sheer rock formation in the surrounding forest.

Stay Coco Tangalla has just six guest rooms. The Main House consists of three doubles and one twin room. The adjacent building has two bedrooms: King Coco and Africa. The larger bedroom, King Coco, has its own private veranda overlooking the sea, with a large bench seat covered in cushions that is ideal for lounging during the day. All rooms are simply but elegantly furnished with silks, local fabrics and artwork. Each has ensuite bathrooms and some have an outdoor shower.

ChildCare Families with children of 12 years and above are welcome to stay at Coco Tangalla. The two rooms in the adjacent building to the Main House can be connected by a passageway, which makes it ideal for families. Babysitting service can be arranged, upon request.

Dine Meals at the Coco Tangalla are created by the in-house chef and include a fusion of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, Chinese and western cuisines. Meals are prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients with fresh seafood purchased daily from the local fisherman and vegetables from the local market. Breakfast is a mix of Western and Sri Lankan favourites, lunches are typically two courses and dinner is three course meal followed by some house favourite puddings.

Relax There are ample spaces in the Coco Tangalla with comfortable seating to relax or you can take relaxing dip in the infinity pool, overlooking the Ocean. The sea is too rough to swim but just 4km away is Seenimodara (Sugar Bay), which ideal for swimming during the season (December to April). There is no spa at the villa but specialists in Ayurvedic therapy can be arranged. Guests can also use services of The Last House, its sister property, which is 10 minutes away.

Experience The south coast offers an attractive mix of beaches, history, wildlife and adventure. Guests at Coco Tangalla are well placed to enjoy the secluded beaches, and an extensive coral reef that runs along the coast, and has several bays, which are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The resort is a good jump off point for Yala National Park, home to many animal species including the elusive Leopard. Bundala’s wetlands are birdwatcher’s paradise and you can watch turtles on the Rekuwa beach.

Location Tangalle is located along the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

Getting there The direct journey to Tangalle from Colombo’s international airport via the Southern Highway will take about 4-hours. Alternatively, there is an Air Taxi service which flies to Dickwella and is about 10 minutes’ drive away from the villa.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. There are two monsoon seasons but they only bring rain to the west and south-west coasts from May to September; and the east coast and northern region between October and February. The rest of the year is sunny and dry but the months of December to April are probably the best time to visit. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C.
