Sost Serena Hotel

Sost Serena Hotel is a new, five-star Serena property in Lower Sost, Upper Hunza, at around 2,800 metres on the historic Silk Road close to the China border. It serves both leisure travellers and trade delegations, combining serious mountain scenery with a polished, contemporary hotel feel in a frontier town setting.

Built in local stone, wood and traditional plaster, the design mixes Wakhi and Burushaski influences with modern comforts. Fifty rooms and suites feature mountain views, central heating, double-glazed windows, good insulation, Wi-Fi and well-appointed bathrooms, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and eco-conscious systems such as solar power.

Public areas include the Osho Khun Restaurant, a lounge and an outdoor terrace for barbecues in warmer months, all positioned to make the most of surrounding peaks. As a secure, comfortable stop near the Khunjerab Pass, Sost Serena Hotel works well at the beginning or end of Karakoram journeys and cross-border itineraries.

STAY

The 50 guest rooms comprising of 39 deluxe rooms and suites at Sost Serena Hotel are designed to feel warm and secure at high altitude. Expect comfortable beds, good insulation, central heating, Wi-Fi and well-equipped bathrooms, with large windows framing the surrounding peaks. Décor uses local stone, wood and regional textiles in a clean, modern style. It works equally well as a one-night border stop or a two-night base to explore Upper Hunza and recover from long drives on the Karakoram Highway.

CHILDCARE

Families will find the hotel straightforward and reassuring, even though there is no formal kids’ club. Larger rooms and interconnecting options can work for parents with children, and staff are generally flexible about extra beds, early dinners and simpler dishes. The secure compound and terraces give space for younger guests to stretch their legs under supervision, while the sense of adventure—being close to the China border and high passes—often appeals to older children and teenagers.

DINE

Dining centres on the main restaurant, where menus mix Pakistani favourites, Chinese-influenced dishes and familiar international options. You can expect hot soups, grilled meats, curries, vegetables, rice and noodles, along with salads and lighter choices. Breakfasts are generous, with eggs to order, bread and hot drinks to set you up for the road. In warmer months, barbecues or outdoor seating make the most of the views, turning a simple meal into a memorable mountain-edge experience.

RELAX

When you are not dealing with border formalities or long drives, Sost Serena offers quiet places to unwind. Guests can sit in the lounge with tea, step out onto terraces to watch clouds move across the peaks, or take short walks nearby to stretch their legs. Evenings are calm and low-key, with cool air, clear skies and early nights more common than nightlife. For many travellers, this pause at altitude is a welcome reset during a demanding journey.

EXPERIENCE

Staying at Sost Serena Hotel puts you right on the old Silk Road, close to Khunjerab Pass and the China border. It is an excellent base for day trips to the high pass (when open), viewpoints over the Hunza River and short explorations of Upper Hunza villages. The contrast between frontier-town traffic and the hotel’s ordered, well-run interior becomes part of the experience, giving structure and comfort to one of the most dramatic sections of the Karakoram Highway.

LOCATION
Sost Serena Hotel stands in Lower Sost in Upper Hunza, close to the China border and the end of the Karakoram Highway in Pakistan. Surrounded by high, barren peaks and wide valley views, it feels like a modern outpost on the historic Silk Road, with the town’s border traffic just below.

GETTING THERE
Most travellers reach Sost by road along the Karakoram Highway from Gilgit, Karimabad or Passu. In good conditions, the drive from Karimabad takes around five to six hours. A private vehicle or pre-arranged transfer is strongly recommended, as landslides, roadworks and weather can affect timings on this high, exposed route.

WHEN TO GO
The best time to stay in Sost is roughly May to October, when the road and Khunjerab Pass are usually open and days are cool but manageable. Snow, extreme cold and closures affect this area outside the main season, so winter travel suits only very experienced, flexible overland travellers.
