Saifullah Jan Guest House

Saifullah Jan Guest House – Rumbur, Kalash Valley is a simple, family-run place in the Rumbur Valley, one of the three Kalash valleys near Chitral. Built on the hillside above the river and village, it gives you close views of fields, wooden houses and the forested slopes that frame this remote corner of the Hindu Kush.

Rooms are basic but welcoming, with simple beds, clean bedding and a homely feel rather than hotel polish. You stay here to be close to Kalash life, not for luxury. Shared spaces, verandas and balconies look over the valley, and the sound of the river is a constant background.

Staying with Saifullah Jan’s family offers a window into Kalash culture, especially during festival times when music and dancing fill the villages. Simple home-cooked meals, local stories and everyday contact with the hosts make the guest house feel more like an extended homestay than formal accommodation, ideal for culturally curious travellers.

STAY

At Saifullah Jan Guest House you stay in simple wooden rooms rather than a formal hotel. Expect basic furniture, clean bedding and a homely, lived-in feel. Some rooms look over the river and terraced fields, with the sound of water in the background. Facilities are modest, with shared or simple private bathrooms, limited electricity and cool nights, so warm layers are important. You are here for closeness to village life, not for modern comforts or polish.

CHILDCARE

This guest house is best suited to adaptable families with older children who enjoy culture and nature. There is no formal childcare, play area or fencing, and village paths, animals and steep ground all need close supervision. However, curious youngsters often find the wooden houses, costumes and everyday rhythms of Rumbur fascinating. Hosts are usually kind about simpler food, flexible meal times and extra blankets, which helps parents keep children comfortable in this remote valley.

DINE

Meals are home-cooked in a simple kitchen, often using local ingredients. Expect basic but hearty dishes: lentils, vegetables, rice, chapatis and simple chicken or egg options, with plenty of tea. Food is served in a shared family space or on a veranda, depending on weather. You will not find a long menu, but you do get straightforward, filling meals and the sense of eating within a Kalash household rather than in a separate hotel dining room.

RELAX

When you are not walking or visiting neighbouring hamlets, this is a place to sit and watch valley life unfold. Guests often spend time on wooden balconies or verandas, listening to the river, watching children play and seeing farmers move between fields. There is little or no Wi-Fi, so books, conversation and early nights replace screens. The combination of fresh air, village sounds and starry skies feels very different from city-based stays in Pakistan.

EXPERIENCE

Staying at Saifullah Jan Guest House gives you a closer view of Kalash culture than a day visit can offer. From here you can walk to nearby shrines, fields and gathering places, see daily routines and, at festival times, hear music and dancing into the evening. Your hosts’ stories and introductions help you understand village customs with respect. For many travellers, the time spent here becomes one of the most memorable parts of a wider Chitral itinerary.

LOCATION
Saifullah Jan Guest House sits above the river in Rumbur, one of the three Kalash valleys near Chitral. Wooden balconies and terraces look over fields, orchards and clustered village houses, with forested slopes rising on both sides. It feels very much part of the village rather than a separate hotel compound.

GETTING THERE
Most travellers reach Chitral by road or flight from Islamabad, then continue by jeep or sturdy vehicle into the Kalash valleys. The track to Rumbur is narrow, rough and sometimes affected by weather, so a local driver and daytime travel are strongly recommended. From the road, short walks lead up to village guest houses.~

WHEN TO GO
The best time to visit Rumbur is roughly April to October, when roads are open and days are pleasantly warm. Spring and autumn festivals are particularly interesting for culture. Winters can be very cold, with snow, mud and limited services, so only suit flexible travellers prepared for basic conditions.
