Royal Kalaw Hills Resort, Kalaw

Royal Kalaw Hills Resort is a charming colonial boutique hotel, set in the hill station of Kalaw in Myanmar’s Shan State. Built on a hillside in 1898, the hotel reminisces of an English country house with Tudor details. There are just 14 rooms grouped in four categories some of which are located in the original building while others are set in the gardens. Occupying an ideal position above the town, it is surrounded with a beautiful garden and a pine forest stretching into the distance.

Guests at the Royal Kalaw Hills Resort can visit the Aung Ban market that comes alive every five days when locals from surrounding villages come down to sell their products. The emphasis here is on the great outdoors, with mountain biking, bird watching and golf available as well as trekking. Further afield are Pindaya caves with their thousands of Buddha statues, and popular Green Elephant Camp.

When to go The best time to visit Burma is during the dry season from November to April. At this time the warm and sunny days are ideal for sightseeing throughout the country. The temperatures start to rise in March, and May to September is best avoided as this is the rainy season when sightseeing can become difficult.
