Hoshinoya Fuji is quintessentially a modern Japanese hotel, set in the forested mountainside, on the edge of Lake Kaawaguchi and north of Mount Fuji. The glassy lakeside cabins that open up into red pine forests, feel completely immersed in nature, offering a true glamping experience, albeit staying indoors in your comfortable beds. There is the Cloud Terrace and marshmallow-toasting kit in your room to be used on the top deck, Takibi lounge with a bonfire space.
This Japanese design hotel meets camping, minus the tents. On arrival at the reception of Hoshinoya Fuji, guests are given stylishly utilitarian bags, containing binoculars, headlight, map and a blanket, before being driven to the lodge. There are 40 minimalist cabins that sit within the mountainside Aokigahara Forest, each offering spectacular views of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji. All are simple and chic with floor to ceiling windows and private balconies with a contemporary campfire.
Dining is a highlight here with the dining room enjoying glorious views of the pine forests. The Cloud Terrace offers a small and intimate alfresco dining space with food prepared entirely in Dutch ovens. A series of wooden platforms, with sofas and campfires, also offer the opportunity to take in the surroundings and there's an additional cafe. Activities at the lodge include horse riding into the pine forest, morning canoeing on Lake Kawaguchi and hiking to the top of Mount Sankodai.
