Manggis, Bali, Indonesia
Amankila is a small boutique resort, set in the Karangasem Regency on the eastern side of Bali. Located near the villages of Candi Dasa and Padang Bai, on a cliff facing out over the sparkling Lombok Strait, this is quite simply a heartbreakingly-beautiful spot. Guests have an opportunity to explore this rich Balinese cultural and historical area with an abundant tropical forest, a coconut grove and a black sand beach, all combined with a sense of calm and serene elegance.
Nestled on a verdant hillside amidst frangipani and bougainvillea trees, Amankila has 34 freestanding suites, all elevated in a way that maximizes sea views above the treetops. Designed like Balinese beach houses with alang alang thatched roofs, each are elegantly furnished and come with private terraces. Some have their own private swimming pools and open-air pavilions where the views reveal nothing but trees and unspoiled coastline as far as the eye can see.
Traditional Balinese and Western meals at Amankila can be enjoyed in various spectacular locations around the resort. The open-air island bar beside the restaurant offers a choice of wines and spirits and traditional Balinese dancing by the pool. Activity enthusiasts can visit the beach club located in a coconut grove down by the shoreline with its own swimming pool, offering a range of watersports equipment. Nearby are two of the island’s most important temples – Luhur Lempuyang and Besakih.

Getting there Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, is served by many international airlines. Helicopter transfer, taking only 18 minutes from the airport, is also available.
When to go Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – dry (between May to September) and wet (between October to April) – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Bali at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.
