Amandira Voyages, Raja Ampat

Amandira is a traditional Phinsi schooner, designed to explore remote islands within the Indonesian Archipelago, including Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park. This two-mast sailing ship measuring 52 metres from bow to stern, was handcrafted by the Konjo tribe and launched in 2015. Built in traditional Phinisi style, it combines the ancient romance of the spice trade with cutting-edge technology and contemporary amenities to provide ultimate luxury for discerning travellers.

Amandira has just five spacious cabins, each with über-minimalist decor, glorious bathrooms, extraordinary service and crisp linen. Accommodating up to 10 guests, it makes an ideal choice for families with children or groups of friends. With 14 staff members on board, the service is seamless and there is an on-board masseur who can relieve weary muscles after day’s excursions. A private chef prepares all meals, while cocktails are served on the spacious foredeck.

From April to September, when the seas and winds are at the calmest, the Amandira roams between the tiny islands of Moyo and the Komodo National Park; from October to March, it explores the slightly wilder area to the north around the Raja Ampat archipelago. The package is usually quoted for five days but you can hire it for as long as you like. These seas are home to some of the richest and most diverse marine life in the world – about a third of the world's aquatic species.

Stay

Komodo, Indonesia houses just five spacious cabins. The Master Cabin is located on the stern’s main deck, while two Deluxe Cabins are situated below deck, on the port and starboard sides. All feature a king-size bed, living space with sofa, and large ensuite bathroom with shower and twin vanities. Two additional cabins with single bunk beds and ensuite bathrooms are available on a complimentary basis when the first three cabins are booked, with a charge per person for food and drink.

ChildCare

Families with children are welcome to stay at Amandira. There are good facilities for children including two cabins with single bunk beds and ensuite bathrooms, special meals, equipment and lots of fun activities included along the way to keep the young explorers engaged.

Dine

There is an experienced chef onboard Amandira, who creates a menu of Indonesian, Western and international dishes according to guests’ preferences. Meals are prepared with catch of the day and fresh locally sourced ingredients and served either in an air-conditioned environment or al fresco on the foredeck. The well-stocked bar has a wide range of spirits and beverages and staff to prepare signature pre-dinner cocktails.

Relax

The main social area on Amandira comprises a lounge, library and entertainment room, and sun lounger set on the teak foredeck. A crew of 14 staff ensure that your stay on Amandira is comfortable and personalised. These include a masseuse to sooth your aching muscles after long treks through rainforests and up volcanoes. There is also a dive guide who can help new divers get their PADI certification and provide expert divers with Nitrox for longer bottom times.

Experience

Guests can explore two of the Indonesian archipelago’s most stunning areas aboard Amandira. Depending on when you visit, it offers 5- to 7-day expeditions either to UNESCO-protected Komodo National Park, a wonderland of natural beauty and home to the giant Komodo dragons, or to Raja Ampat islands, which encompass more than 40,000 square kilometres of unparalleled marine life and thousands of islands, cays and shoals cloaked in tropical jungle.

Location Amandira sets sail from Amanwana, Moyo Island and cruises to the Komodo National Park or the Banda Archipelago in the Spice Islands.

When to go Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – wet and dry – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. Given the different climates throughout the archipelago, the vessel is able to operate different expeditions at different times of year. Between December and March, Amandira operates expeditions to explore the magical waters of Raja Ampat, and from April to November, the expedition changes course for the mythical island of Komodo.
