Wildflower Hall, Shimla

The Wildflower Hall, Shimla is a colonial retreat house, built by Lord Kitchner, as his retreat on a vantage ridge-top outside Shimla. Lord Kitchner’s inspiration were the alluring views of the Himalayas from the hills around Shimla. The old house has long gone but the prime location inspired a new and better property to develop. Today, the Oberoi’s Wildflower Hall takes its place and keeps his spirit alive.

The Wildflower Hall, Shimla has 87 rooms, all richly furnished with teak wood floors and hand knotted rugs. Every room has a spacious marble bathroom with separate shower and walk-in closets and personalized butler service. Three Deluxe Suites feature a separate living room with a fireplace. The very grand Lord Kitchener Suite has a four-poster bed in the master suite and a second bedroom. The small spa pool outside on the terrace has wonderful views of mountains and valleys below.

The two restaurants at the Wildflower Hall, offer the choice of fine international cuisine and traditional Indian cooking, or simply relax with a quiet drink in the timeless elegance of The Cavalry Bar. A world class The Oberoi Spa offers holistic treatments based on Ayurvedic, Asian and Western therapies. There is a choice of opportunities to enjoy the natural surroundings.

The Lutyens with its old-world interiors is the ideal venue for private dining. The Cavalry Bar is dedicated to the British regiments who served in India. The open-air whirlpool affords magnificent views across the Greater Himalayas, while the indoor pool - lit and adorned by overhead crystal chandeliers - is temperature controlled throughout the year. The modern fitness suite is fully equipped and air conditioned for guests' comfort.

Experience

The best time to stay at The Wildflower Hall, Shimla is during the Indian Summer. We were there in September and the weather was still wonderful. On a cold day, you can sit in the outdoor Jacuzzi; on a sunny and cool afternoon, enjoy high tea in the lawn; and on a warm crisp morning, take a sedate ride on Wildflower Hall's two gorgeous ex race bred horses. For the more adventurous the resort offers white river rafting, trekking, mountain biking, ice skating (in winter) and golf.
