Vivanta By Taj - Fisherman's Cove is a heritage beachfront retreat, set about 38 kilometres (24 miles) south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Built on the ramparts of an 18th-century Dutch fort and the once small fishing village of Covelong, it is a perfect destination to unwind and take in the panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal. Situated near the Covelong Beach, the resort is perfectly placed to explore Chennai, as well as the temple towns of Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram.

Surrounded by 22 acres of tropical gardens, Fisherman's Cove houses 88 rooms and suites. Sleek and minimalist, it incorporates modern Scandinavian and European design influences. Rooms are assigned to different wings spread around the grounds, while the spacious cottages, some with their own private gardens have an outdoor sitting area overlooking the sea. For relaxation, there is a fabulous outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre which offers yoga classes and Jiva Spa.

The three restaurants at the Fisherman's Cove excel in multi-cuisine, ranging from European gastronomy to exquisite seafood to mouth-watering barbecue. Families with children will enjoy turtle watching (seasonal) and catamaran rides. Guests can also try their hand at the traditional sea fishing methods practiced by the local fishermen. Day excursions include trips to Chennai and the ancient monuments of Mahabalipuram known for its stunning stone carvings.

There are three dining options at the Fisherman's Cove, all offering a mix of traditional Indian flavours and modern cuisine. Overlooking the pool, is the Seagull restaurant serving a popular continental, Indian and Italian fare. Bay View offers an exquisite dining experience overlooking the beach and specialises in seafood and on occasions barbecue. For a taste of Mediterranean cuisine, hit the Upper Deck with stunning views of the Bay of Bengal.

Facilities at Fisherman’s Cove include a fabulous outdoor swimming pool, a fitness centre which offers yoga classes and Jiva Spa. For activity enthusiasts there are tennis and badminton courts, beach cricket, football and volleyball available. There is also a business centre and a souvenir shop.

Experience

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is home to 17th-century heritage buildings and architecture. Fisherman's Cove, located on the outskirts of the city provides both the luxury of enjoying the beach and easy access to the city. Nothing beats the experience of going fishing with the locals, returning with your fresh catch and served on your plate for dinner. Alternatively, take a day trip to see city highlights including Fort St. George, Kapaleeshwarar Temple and Nellapattu Bird Sanctuary.

Location Fisherman’s Cove can be found 34 km south of the bustling city of Chennai in the region of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the Covelong Beach and the 60km north of Mahabalipuram.

Getting there Fisherman’s Cove is a 10-hour international flight to Chennai International Airport, followed by a 34km car ride down the coast.

When to go The climate in southern India shows only slight seasonal variations. Temperatures and humidity remain relatively high all year round. Rainfall is common at any time of the year and the Monsoon Season has only marginally more precipitation than at any other time.
