Stay at Bundi Vilas

Bundi Vilas is a heritage townhouse, set near the main wall of a fortified palace in Bundi, in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan state in northwest India. Once a ramshackle ruin, it has been renovated by the Sharma family in modern Rajasthani style with stone pillars, scalloped alcoves and stone jali window screens. Arun Sharma and his mother who live on the property ensure that it forms an ideal base for travellers to explore this royal town, off the usual Rajasthan tourist trail.

Spread within the four-storey structure, Bundi Vilas offers just 7 boutique heritage rooms. Entrance is through a 40-foot-high stone archway and stairs lead up to spacious bedrooms decorated in traditional style with four-poster beds draped in fine linen, antique furniture and Rajasthani style windows overlooking the town. On the top floor are two rooms that offer the best view of the town and the fort, though visited sometimes by local monkeys.

Meals at the Bundi Vilas are home cooked and prepared under supervision of Arun’s mother. Expect delicious Rajasthani cuisine with some Western dishes, served on the roof top terrace. There is enough to do around Bundi town which is known for its forts, palaces, havelis and step well reservoirs. Interesting sites include Taragarh Fort, Bundi Palace and Chitrasala Palace. Also visit Raja Bahadur Singh Museum, which exhibits an extraordinary collection of the royal families.

Stay

Bundi Vilas offers seven individual air-conditioned rooms. Each of these are designed in traditional style with exposed original masonry, low lighting and a attention to detail. The rooms on the top are the largest and offer the best views and open out onto a terrace where breakfast is served. Be aware that the terrace is often visited by local monkeys. Inside, expect four-poster beds with local hand-printed covers, antique furniture and ensuite bathrooms with power showers.

Families with children are welcome to stay at the Bundi Vilas but there are no specific facilities available for children. Babysitting service can be arranged on request.

Dine

Experience authentic vegetarian home cooking by Arun’s mother who runs the kitchen at the Bundi Vilas. Breakfast includes Western and Indian dishes with fruits, juices and yoghurts, eggs to order and home-made jams. Most guests have lunch out while on a day tour or back at the hotel. There is a new open-air terrace with magnificent views of the floodlit fort, where dinner and drinks are served in the evenings in the cool summer breeze.

Relax

There is an outdoor pool to relax and staff at the Bundi Vilas can arrange for massages. Within the hotel there are enough spaces to relax including the roof terrace with views over the town and Jait Sagar lake, which has comfortable seating to relax. The in-house bar offers local and international spirits including Indian wine.

Experience

Bundi is a royal town known for its palaces, traditional havelis, magnificent forts and step-well reservoirs. Bundi Vilas can organise a day tour of the town to include the 14th-century Taragarh Fort and Bundi Palace known for its impressive murals and frescoes. Another popular attraction includes the Sukh Mahal, set on the banks of a placid Jait Sagar Lake and surrounded by terraced gardens. It is said that Rudyard Kipling apparently stayed here while writing Kim.

Getting there 8-hour international flight to Delhi or Mumbai and then an onwards connecting flight to Jaipur or Udaipur.

When to go Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away from European winters. Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. Although it rarely rains in Rajasthan, the temperature drops slightly during the Monsoon period from July to September, and humidity increases. Post-monsoon period from October to November is the official "tourist season" in Rajasthan that extends into the winter months from December to March when its warm during the day and chilly at night.
