Yangkhil Resort is a traditional Bhutanese hotel, set in a village outside Trongsa town in central Bhutan. Sitting on a spur opposite the resort is the 16th-century Trongsa Dzong, a grand monolith, with its slopping whitewashed walls and intricate Bhutanese architecture, the largest in the country. It was indeed the seat of the kings in the 18th-century and now serves as a perfect stopover for tourists travelling to Eastern Bhutan on the main Bhutanese highway that runs East-West.
Overlooking the Mangde Chu Valley, Yangkhil Resort offers 21 rooms. These are spread out in four blocks with four rooms each and one in the main building. The architecture is traditional style, and rooms are perfectly placed to enjoy full views of the valley below. Inside, all rooms have simple décor and are furnished with comfortable beds and necessities. There are no TVs or mini-bars but with so much to do and see in the surrounds, you won’t really need them.
Meals at the Yangkhil Resort are prepared by a team of local chefs, in home style with local fresh ingredients. The menu is traditional Bhutanese and Chinese style with some Indian and western favourites. In the surrounds are nature trails and monasteries worth a visit but the highlight of course is Trongsa Dzong. It has a small but interesting museum with many artefacts donated by the Royal family and a short film giving a brief overview of the Bhutanese history.

Each cottage contains four rooms with two rooms on ground floor and two on upper floor, each with a balcony. All rooms have wooden floors and are simply furnished with comfortable beds with rooms on upper floor offering views of the valley. Rooms are heated by a room heater and tiled bathrooms come with bathtub and separate shower, and basic amenities. There are tea/coffee making facilities and hair-dryers on request.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Yangkhil Resort. Although there are no specific facilities available for children the hotel staff is very helpful accommodating to their requests and the in-house restaurant is flexible with children’s menu and timings.
Dine There an in-house restaurant at Yangkhil Resort serving home-cooked meals with fresh local ingredients. Menu is primarily traditional Bhutanese and Chinese style with Indian and western favourite dishes. Weather permitting, meals are served in the open-air courtyard with a bon-fine and breathtaking views of Trongsa Dzong, Ta Dzong and surroundings.
Relax Although there is no spa, there are lots of spaces to relax in Yangkhil Resort. This is a place to relax and contemplate, to sit in the sun and read a book, or just sit and take in the surrounding beautiful scenery and breath in fresh mountain air. The local hospitable staff will serve continues cups of tea and bring you a blanket to keep you warm.
Experience Guests at Yangkhil Resort will enjoy beautiful views of Tongsa Dzong, one of the most beautiful in Bhutan. Set on a ridge with whitewashed walls and red roofs, it was the ancestral home for the Royal family. As per the history of Bhutan, the first and the second king of Bhutan ruled the country from this ancestral throne. During Trongsa Tshechu, an ancient festival, traditional mask dances are held with over 200 monks. Other activities include, trekking and leisure walks in the surrounds.
Location Trongsa is located between the towns of Bumthang to the east and Gangtey and Punakha to the west along the main Bhutanese Highway. Yangkil is located just outside of town overlooking the main Dzong and the valley.
When to go In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.
