Your journey through Turkmenistan commences with an early arrival in Ashgabat, where you're welcomed by your guide and settled into a quality hotel. The day is dedicated to exploring the capital's most iconic sights, including the striking white marble monument in the Park of Independence, reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. The itinerary enriches your understanding of local history and culture with visits to the Earthquake Museum and the Carpet Museum, showcasing exquisite Turkmen craftsmanship. The day concludes at your hotel, providing a peaceful end to an insightful introduction to Ashgabat.
The exploration continues as you delve into the ancient history of Ashgabat with a visit to the Old Nisa fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the grandeur of the Parthian Empire. Covering an expansive 14 hectares, Old Nisa offers a glimpse into a bygone era of opulence and power. The day's adventure also includes a visit to the National Museum of History and Ethnography, further immersing you in Turkmenistan's rich heritage. After a day filled with discovery, you'll return to your hotel to relax and reflect on the day's experiences.
Venturing slightly outside Ashgabat, the day begins with a short drive to Geok-Depe, renowned for the magnificent Akhal-Tekke horses. This excursion offers a unique opportunity to observe these pure-blood horses up close at a local farm. En route, you'll pass significant historical sites, including a former Tekke stronghold and the Kov-Ata cave, known for its naturally-heated waters, inviting you for a refreshing dip. This day promises a blend of natural beauty, cultural insights, and historical intrigue.
Leaving Ashgabat behind, you'll fly to Mary, embarking on a journey to the ancient city of Merv. As you explore the 1200-hectare historical park, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll traverse through time, visiting ruins of forts, mausoleums, and absorbing the profound history of this once-thriving Silk Road city. The local History Museum in Mary enriches your visit with archaeological treasures dating back to the third millennium BC. The day concludes with a transfer to a comfortable three-star hotel in Mary, offering a restful end to a day of exploration.
After breakfast in Mary, you'll catch an early flight back to Ashgabat and journey across the Karakum Desert to Bokurdak. This visit to a local village immerses you in traditional Turkmen life, from embroidery and baking to experiencing the warmth of Turkmen hospitality in a family home. Participating in daily activities and tasting local delicacies like camel milk and ishlekli provides a deep dive into the culture and traditions of the Turkmen people. The day wraps up with a return to Ashgabat for your final night in Turkmenistan.
Your final day takes you to Kunya-Urgench, another UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in medieval monuments and history as the former capital of the Khorezmshah Empire.
