Warwick Gardens: Colonial Luxury in Sri Lanka

Warwick Gardens is a restored colonial tea planter's mansion, set north of Horton Plain in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country. Originally built in the 1880's, it has been beautifully refurbished, retaining its original architecture into a luxury boutique hotel. Set in Sri Lanka’s highlands, fondly referred to as ‘Little New Zealand’, it occupies a perfect location at the back of a horse-shoe shaped valley, providing stunning views to all sides, particularly to towards the rolling hills of Nuwara Eliya.

Sprawled over a 6-acre mountain estate, Warwick Gardens offers just five rooms. All are elegantly furnished and feature fireplaces, antique furniture, king-size beds and ensuite bathrooms with free-standing roll-top bath. There is a cosy living room, complete with a fire place and grand piano and a dramatic red dining room with a 10-seater table and crystal chandelier, both of which open out to a patio and terraced gardens.

Guests at Warwick Gardens can indulge in a host of dining experiences from having breakfast in bed to laid back alfresco lunches, enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Hiking is a popular activity with many walking trails that criss-cross through tea plantations, some of which reaching nearby mountaintops of Mount Pidurutalagala and Single Tree Mountain. Guests can also visit the hotel’s organic farm that supplies its produce to the resort’s kitchen.

Several hiking trails abound, winding through tea estates, vegetable gardens, and rural villages, including a challenging full day’s trek to the Olive Mountain. Its altitude and mild climate attracted the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains, including the Nuwara Eliya Golf course.

Location Warwick Gardens is a restored colonial tea planter's mansion, set north of Horton Plain in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. However, it barely gets unbearably hot in the Hill Country. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, when days are warm (around 28C) with cool nights. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here when there’s almost no rain at all.
