Mas Villa: Historic Luxury in Sri Lanka

Mas Villa is a traditional style boutique retreat, set above the beautiful Kotmale reservoir in Sri-Lanka's Hill Country. Originally a 19th-century, manor house of a prominent Dissanayake family, it is ideally positioned close to the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya and the city of Kandy. Now fully refurbished in its Kandyan architecture, it stands majestically overlooking the Kotmale Valley. Still owned by the Dissanayake family it retains its old charm and traditional hospitality.

Set on 11 acres of lush tropical gardens, Mas Villa offers just seven rooms on two floors. The original design features include courtyards, verandas and spacious rooms, tastefully decorated with Dutch period antiques. However, the Master Suite occupying the first floor is incredibly spacious and private and has beautiful views of the Kotmale reservoir and the surrounding hills. Guests can choose to book individual rooms or the entire villa, if travelling in a larger group.

Dining at Mas Villa is informal and all of the cuisine is made with delicious organic fruit and vegetables grown in the hotel's own gardens. For relaxation, there is a pool with sun loungers and spa treatments are available either in your room or in the spa pavilion. Activities in the surround included guided walks, mountain biking and fishing on the lake. Guests can also explore the reservoir on a scenic boat trip or take a refreshing dip in the blue waters.

Dine Dining at the Mas Villa is one of the highlights. The menu is a fusion of Sri Lankan and Western dishes served on the veranda or the elaborate 40 feet long dining room, complete with a wrought iron candelabra, that opens out onto the beautiful valley. Begin with English breakfast, followed by a delicious Sri Lankan lunch. Dinners are more elaborate, candle-lit in the lush tropical garden, with a daily changing 3- course set menu filled with Asian and Continental favourites.

Relax For relaxation there is a lovely pool with sun loungers with amazing views out over the countryside. Mas Villa offers a number of rejuvenating spa treatments, available in the spa pavilion or in the privacy of your room. For those who wish to relax indoors, there is a billiards room, including a pool table, a library and lounge with a TV.

Experience Situated in the hill country, near Kotmale Reservoir, guests at Mas Villa are well placed to explore the tea hills of the nearby Nuwara Eliya and the cultural sites of Kandy. Take hiking and mountain biking trips to discover the waterfalls of Gerandi Ella and Ramboda Ella, and explore Kotmale Reservoir. Visit the Pusulpitiya temple and follow the trail of Dutugemunu, one of the best loved kings of the country. Day trips can be arranged to Kandy, Pinnawala or Nuwara Eliya.

Location Mas Villa is located in the hill country and enjoys a more refreshing climate than the rest of Sri Lanka, it does not have air conditioning.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with consistently warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. However, it barely gets unbearably hot in the Hill Country. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, when days are warm (around 28C) with cool nights. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here when there’s almost no rain at all.
