Best things to do in Passu

Passu is a small village in Upper Hunza, in northern Pakistan, best known for its dramatic mountain scenery and quiet, high-altitude feel. Travellers come for the jagged Passu Cones (Cathedral Ridge), wide valley views and the icy sweep of nearby glaciers, including Passu and Batura. It’s an excellent base for gentle walks, short hikes and photography at sunrise and sunset, when the peaks turn gold. The Karakoram Highway runs close by, making Passu easy to combine with Karimabad, Gulmit and Khunjerab Pass. Expect simple guesthouses, warm hospitality and crisp mountain air.

EXPERIENCES

A range of thrilling experiences handpicked by our experts. Don’t see one that’s just right for you? No problem. Our local insiders will create precisely what you want.

PHOTOGRAPH THE PASSU CONES AT GOLDEN HOUR

The Passu Cones (also called Cathedral Ridge) are the village’s most iconic landmark, rising in a sharp, serrated line above the valley. Plan an early start or a late afternoon stroll to catch the peaks as the light warms and the shadows deepen. The best viewpoints are often simple pull-ins along the Karakoram Highway, village lanes, and the river flats. Bring a zoom lens for detail shots, but also take wide frames to show the cones against farm fields and glacier-fed streams.

WALK TO PASSU GLACIER VIEWPOINTS

Passu Glacier is a striking river of ice spilling down from the mountains, with a rugged, ever-changing surface of moraine and crevasses. Local tracks lead towards safe viewpoints where you can appreciate the scale without venturing onto unstable ice. The walk is usually straightforward but can be dusty and uneven, so solid shoes help. Go with a local guide if you want to get closer, understand the landscape, and avoid risky sections. It’s especially atmospheric in cooler morning air.

HIKE BATURA GLACIER AND THE UPPER VALLEY TRAILS

For travellers who want a longer, more remote outing, the Batura Glacier area offers expansive scenery and quieter trails. You’ll pass grazing land, stone-walled fields and small seasonal settlements, with huge mountain walls filling the horizon. The routes vary from half-day hikes to multi-day treks deeper into the valley, so you can match it to your fitness and time. Weather changes quickly here; carry layers, water and snacks. The sense of space around Batura is the real reward.

CROSS THE PASSU SUSPENSION BRIDGE

The Passu Suspension Bridge is a classic Hunza adventure: narrow planks, open gaps, and a lively sway above the river. It is not long, but it feels dramatic, and it’s a memorable way to experience the valley’s raw terrain. If you are uneasy with heights, go slowly, focus on your footing, and let others pass. On the far side, short paths and river views make a pleasant extension. Choose a calm day, as wind can make the crossing more intense.

DRIVE KARAKORAM HIGHWAY TO KHUNJERAB PASS

Passu sits on one of the most spectacular stretches of the Karakoram Highway, making day trips easy. Head north towards Khunjerab Pass for high-altitude panoramas, wide valleys and a sense of travelling along an ancient corridor between Pakistan and China. Stops at viewpoints and small settlements break up the drive, and the scenery becomes increasingly stark and alpine as you climb. Carry snacks and water, keep an eye on the weather, and allow time to acclimatise if you are sensitive to altitude.

EXPERIENCE VILLAGE LIFE

Passu is not only about landscapes; it’s also a place to slow down and enjoy everyday life in Upper Hunza. Walk through lanes lined with poplars, visit small orchards in season, and try local apricot products and simple home-style cooking. Conversation with hosts often reveals fascinating detail about the Wakhi culture, local farming rhythms and how people live with the mountains. Evenings are quiet, with crisp air and clear skies when conditions are right. It’s an ideal stop for travellers who value authenticity over bustle.
