Heritage Madurai is a luxury colonial-style hotel, set on the western edge of the city of Madurai. Originally a Club House with verdant gardens filled with ancient banyan trees, it was designed as a hotel in the 1970s by renowned Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa. The building has now been extended and renovated by one of his disciples, using a variety of local materials, including the salvaged 18th-Century Chettinad columns, making it a relaxing base in this beautiful city.
Designed in the magnificent local temple architecture and palatial Chettinad mansions, Heritage Madurai offers 72 air-conditioned rooms and villas. All are spacious in size, minimalist in design and decorated with handcrafted period style furniture. Each has a separate living and bedroom area, a spacious en-suite bathroom, and many have private plunge pools and sun decks. Dining options include the Banyan Restaurant offering Indian specialities, Swig & Tee Bar and a Coffee Shop.
Facilities at the Heritage Madurai include a stunning swimming pool with sun loungers and Heritage Spa offering a range of Ayurvedic massages and treatments with aromatic herbal teas. Take a private tour to visit the city’s many temples including the famous Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple, displaying thousands of colourful carvings of gods, goddesses, demons and heroes. If possible, visit during the 4-day Pongal harvest festival, usually celebrated from 14 January to 17 January.

Stay Heritage Madurai features 41 Deluxe rooms and 31 villas. Each are quintessentially 'Heritage', minimalistic is design with terracotta, granite or wooden floors, period style furniture and handcrafted artefacts. Geoffrey Bawa rooms, named after building’s renowned architect, have 70sqm of space and the enormous 92 sqm villas have access to a private courtyard. All have spacious bedroom with separate living area, and many have their own private plunge pools and sun decks.
ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at the Heritage Madurai. There is a kid’s playground, children's menus, high chairs for child dining and a babysitting service available on request.
Dine The Banyan Restaurant at Heritage Madurai serves contemporary Indian and international cuisine in light and airy surroundings. Dine indoors with murals on the walls or enjoy a meal prepared by your personal chef beneath a 200-year-old Banyan tree. There's also the Swig & Tee Bar, with an invigorating ambience, perfect to entice you for a sundowner and The Coffee Shop, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, an ideal destination for breakfast and afternoon tea or coffee with yummy snacks.
Relax Facilities at the Heritage Madurai include a large swimming pool that replicates the design of the step-well tank in Thirumalai Temple. The Heritage Spa offering Ayurveda and Swedish massages and other soothing treatments. There is also a library, souvenir shop, coffee shop, and Cultural Village including an arts and crafts centre.
Experience Madurai is an ancient city with a rich cultural and architectural heritage, also called the ‘Athens of the east’. Heritage Madurai can arrange private tours of the city to include the historic Hindu Meenakshi Temple. Other highlights include the 17th-century Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, the Gandhi Museum, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Goripalayam Dargah and Kazimar Big Mosque. In the surrounds is the interesting village of Alagar koyil centred around the Kallazhagar Temple.

Getting there 10-hour international flight to Chennai International Airport, followed by a domestic flights to Madurai. More suited to part of a wider itinerary.
When to go The climate in southern India shows only slight seasonal variations. Temperatures and humidity remain relatively high all year round. Rainfall is common at any time of the year and the Monsoon Season has only marginally more precipitation than at any other time.
