Maison Polanka is a heritage boutique retreat, set near the Royal Residence in Siem Reap, Northwestern Cambodia. Hidden behind Wat Polanka in a quiet residential quarter northeast of town, Maison Polanka was once the French-Khmer owners’ family home. Set on the eastern side of the Siem Reap River and just a short walk away from local markets, this luxurious, and private, boutique hotel is ideal for families or small groups wanting to explore the Angkor temples.
Set within walled gardens, Maison Polanka has a set of two ancient Khmer wooden houses. The family’s The Maison has four-rooms filled with vintage furniture, Khmer artefacts, and pieces by local artists. The estate also features The Khmer house, a traditional stilted dwelling relocated here from a rural village; upstairs is an open-plan suite, while on ground level, an alfresco living room comes complete with a pair of bicycles for trips up the road to Angkor Wat.
Delicious meals at Maison Polanka are straight from the owner’s family recipe book of French and Khmer dishes, and served in the cool, open-sided poolside pavilion. In the surrounds, the Old Market area can be reached via tuk-tuk in 10 minutes while the Angkor temples are 15 minutes away. Maison Polanka can assist you with your tours of the magnificent, 12th-century Angkorian temple and give you insiders’ tips to avoid the crowds.
Amenities
Stay Maison Polanka has two villas, The Maison and The Khmer House comprising of just five rooms. The Maison is home to four rooms (Green, Purple, Yellow and Orange) of which The Green room is the largest and leads onto a broad veranda with views over the pool and the sala. All have wooden floors, air-conditioning and modern stylish bathrooms. The Khmer House is the fifth room but is essentially a private house and comes with a huge terrace overlooking the gardens.
ChildCare Families with children are very welcome to stay at Maison Polanka but there are no specific facilities available for children. However, large families can book either the large Khmer House or Maison House which is ideal for families or group of friends travelling together. Children would enjoy the cool pool, the bullock and ox cart rides as well as the complimentary bicycles on offer.
Dine The concept of Maison Polanka is that when you are on a holiday, you don’t want to be rushed. Guests enjoy breakfast at any time of the morning, relaxed lunch in the shaded garden and afternoon tea with a cup of Mariage Frères tea served in fine English china crockery. Evening cocktails are best enjoyed in the Sala followed by an intimate candlelit dinner. The menu is centred around traditional Cambodian dishes that originate from authentic family recipes.
Relax Facilities at the Maison Polanka include a small spa located on the ground floor and a compact pool, perfect place to unwind after cruising around town on one of the hotel’s vintage leather seat bicycles. Dedicated massage beds in the open space underneath Khmer House can be used by guests. Maison Polanka offers cooking classes to its guests. There’s a small souvenir boutique stall on the premises, selling select locally made krama (traditional Khmer scarf) and pottery items.
Experience Siem Reap has a growing popularity as a holiday destination but it’s also known for its burgeoning food, fashion, art and design scene. Maison Polanka can recommend visits to the best artists and artisan’s workshops. These include Christine's store that displays jewellery, fashion accessories, clothes and home décor, Galerie Cambodge a chic and urban showcase of an art de vivre drawn from Asia's culture and Louise Loubatieres lifestyle store born out of a love for beautiful things.
Location Located just 20 minutes from Siem Reap Airport in Cambodia.
Getting there Phum Baitang is a 20-minute drive from Siep Ream International Airport.
When to go Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
