Sukau Rainforest Lodge - Experience Borneo's Wildlife Haven

BORNEO, MALAYSIA

The lower Kinabatangan wildlife sanctuary is like an open wildlife safari park. It is only 26,103 hectares in size but within this tiny area, is a great variety of flora and fauna, endemic to Borneo. The Sukau Rainforest Lodge nestles on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, that runs through the sanctuary and is home to many of Borneo's magnificent wildlife.

Built in the traditional architectural style, native to the Malaysian jungle, Sukau Rainforest Lodge offers newly renovated rooms in lodges constructed on elevated stilts, protecting it from heavy seasonal floods. It is reached by a two and half hour journey by boat from Sukau, which adds to the overall jungle experience. The lodge is tastefully designed and has 20 rooms which have been recently refurbished.

The care for the environment and support for the local community is at the heart of this Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Many of the staff is employed from local villages, the supplies are bought from local shops, the river boats and all lodge repairs are undertaken by local craftsmen. The big plus is that it uses electric boats – they are silent and offer a better chance of seeing wildlife and of course they are friendly to the environment.

Relax Sukau Rainforest Lodge has Halia Spa using traditional massages to refreshing facials. Although, small in size, it has experienced therapists so it’s worth checking their Spa Menu and giving a try.

In the evenings, there are often presentations or take part in evening nature walks looking for nocturnal creatures. The Menanggol, a small tributary of the great Kinabatangan is where you see a variety of birds, snakes, monkeys and if lucky – the elephants and orangutans. The Oxbow lakes give the perspective of the type of habitat found at the lower Kinabatangan.
