SANDAKAN, BORNEO, MALAYSIA
Sepilok Nature Resort, designed in traditional style is set around a natural lake in a spectacularly landscaped area with manicured lawns and rolling hills. Located about 25 kilometres from the town of Sandakan and just 10 minutes’ walk from the Rehabilitation Centre, it makes an ideal place from which to visit the Orang-utans. The centre is one of the biggest and may the only hope for Orang-utan’s survival.
The 24 timber en-suite chalets at Sepilok Nature Resort are scattered around the beautiful gardens with an amazing variety of orchids and birdlife. The rooms are spacious and clean with a large bathroom and an outside patio area, perfect place for the morning cup of tea and to enjoy the surroundings. The resort’s restaurant serves both east and western dishes, served on the terrace and accompanied by sounds of the chirping birds and tree frogs.
Explore the natural Bornean wonders of the Sepilok Forest Reserve, where proboscis monkeys, macaques, tarsiers, amphibians, reptiles and birds abound. The Sepilok rainforest is home of the last wild orang-utans of Northern Borneo and the reason we came here. In the day, take a tour of the Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre where young captive or abandoned Orang-utans and are being helped to re-adjust into a life in the wild.

When to go The best time to see Orang-utans is between March and October (peak July and August) when the trees are fruiting and they come down to lower slopes to feed. This makes it easier to find them during the walking safaris. The driest season runs from April to October but even during this season, a good raincoat is a must. The heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January and the lowest in between February and April.
