MULU, BORNEO
Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa has been recently renovated with an ethnic design resembling a longhouse. It rests on 15-foot wooden stilts rising over lush vegetation and linked by a series of walkways. The resort has 101 luxurious rooms in three types; Deluxe, Premier and Suites that differ in size. Each guest room comes with its own deck overlooking the scenic rainforest or Melinau River, with modern amenities such as flat screen TVs and high-speed Internet access.
The newly furnished resort is now managed by Marriot with refurnished new lobby lounge, open-space business centre and library. The resort has a lovely pool area which is welcoming after a long day of exploring the nearby caves, the reason you will have come here. The Wildflower is the resort’s one main restaurant but the food is great. There is a la carte service and buffet and meals can be had indoors or dine al fresco, which is recommended.
Earlier, we were in the Sarawak Chamber – largest natural underground chamber known in the whole world. And just like the first explorers who came here in 1978 with the Royal Geographical Expedition, we felt their pride and sense of discovery. After all, we are in the Mulu National Park, in the north of Sarawak, Borneo; easy to point on the map but not so easy to reach. It is after all in the middle of nowhere.
