BORNEO, MALAYSIA
Laban Rata is located at the base of Mt Kinabalu where climbers make a compulsory rest to recuperate with food, showers and dormitories. There are 3 ensuite rooms and 60 bunks with basic amenities and common bathrooms with showers. The rooms are simple and being at high-altitude neither the water nor the rooms are warm but they have all you need to rest for a good night sleep. Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in South East Asia, standing at 4,095 metres above sea level.
It takes two days to climb Mt Kinabalu and although you do not need any previous experience at mountain climbing, you still need to have a reasonable level of fitness and indomitable willpower to push through fatigue and discomfort. The first day is a 14km hike from park headquarters to Laban Rata that takes about four to five hours. Along the route is a diverse array of unique flora and fauna including rare orchids, pitcher plants, and the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world.
The ascent for Low’s Peak begins early at about 3am the following day. This normally takes about three hours from Laban Rata, the idea being to watch the sun rise from the summit. Most travel guides and operators say that Mt. Kinabalu is easy to climb, but ask a mountaineer and he will vehemently disagree. No mountain is easy to climb.
