Gangtey Lodge is a traditional stone farmhouse style hotel, set at the head of the beautiful long Gangtey valley in Western Bhutan. Situated on a pine wooded ridge, the double-height lobby-lounge with an entire wall of glass frames the 17th-century Gangtey monastery and the valley beyond, speckled with rice paddies and grazing yaks. Envisioned by Brett and Omar Melzer who run 'Balloons over Bagan', they have brought their successful model into this beautiful valley in Bhutan.

Designed by an award-winning architect Mary Lou Thomson it was conceived as a luxurious Bhutanese farmhouse. With just 12 guest rooms, guests at Gangtey Lodge are cocooned in a palette of warm reds and yellows with stone, wood and fireplaces all featuring prominently. Mary has elegantly used textures, patterns and shapes of Bhutan, creating a style that is uniquely Bhutanese but strikingly fresh and contemporary.

The guest rooms and public spaces at the Gangtey Lodge, have been carefully designed to position windows and columns so as to frame the Gangtey Valley. Inside, it houses a stunning collection of hand-crafted artefacts and traditional motifs to create a feeling of staying in a grand local house. Although situated close to Amankora, it differs in its ambience of providing a more authentic décor and style. The result is exclusive luxury in one of the most beautiful and remote valleys of Bhutan.

Stay

Gangtey Lodge has just 12 spacious (49 sqm) suites. All are beautifully designed in rural Bhutanese architecture with wooden ceilings and furnished with luxurious fabrics and linens, sofas and designer furniture. Each room has an enormous bath set in the window overlooking the valley below. Rooms are heated by Swiss wood-burning stoves and underfloor heating beneath the hand-cut stone tiles. The attention to detail is omnipresent with fixtures and fittings sourced from across the globe.

ChildCare

Families with children are welcome to stay at Gangtey Lodge but there are no specific facilities available for children. However, there are plenty of child friendly activities and the hotel staff are very hospitable. Also, Bhutan is an incredibly safe place to travel with your family.

Dine

There is one full-service restaurant at the Gangtey Lodge, headed by a Malaysian chef, serving home-style Western and Asian cuisine. Meals are served in the main living-cum-dining area with plush leather sofas, two stone fireplaces, and ground-to-ceiling windows offering great views of the valley. Lunch is usually on the terrace or for guests exploring the day are served with gourmet picnic. Evening meals can be had in the outdoors, housed in an authentic Bhutanese Dragon Tent.

Relax

For relaxation, Gangtey Lodge offers a wide range of professional spa treatments in your own private suite. There is also a separate Hot Stone Bath House where 2 pax can enjoy a massage located in a separate building to the main lodge. There is no swimming pool or fitness centre, but the hotel has seven mountain bikes for exploring the surrounds. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available.

Experience

The comfortable main lounge at Gangtey Lodge with ground-to-ceiling windows frame mountain and marshland vistas, with opportunities to spot seasonal rare black necked cranes (October to March). During the day, guests can take leisurely walks or half- to full-day treks into the Phojikha Valley to visit local gompas and monasteries or enjoy breathtaking views of the valley. Walking distance from the hotel is the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and the hotel also offers Balloon flights.

When to go In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.
