Indochina Journey: Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam

Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia on the Indochina Peninsula share a common history much before the before French colonization and the Vietnam War. Today, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is an upwardly mobile city, known for its French colonial architecture, Cu Chi tunnels the Mekong Delta.

In Hoi An, Vietnam, discover a well-preserved ancient city of the Champa Kingdom. The nearby ruins, once impressive tower-temples of Champa Empire date back to 4th to 13th century AD. Halong Bay in the north, is known for the jungle-covered outcrops of Karst, in the Gulf of Tonkin. Spend a night on a traditional wooden junk, and marvel at the intricacy of religious carvings in many forms.

In Luang Prabang, Cambodia, see the ancient temples and visit caves where old Buddhist statues are taken to appease spirits. The highlight of the cruise is Cambodia’s ornate 12th-century Angkor Wat or temple near Siem Reap.

Getting There There are few direct flights from Europe to Vietnam’s three main international airports but these are steadily increasing over the years. The majority of visitors take indirect flights routed through Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. It can be cheaper if you fly to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore or regular international carriers and from there take one of the low cost carriers to Vietnam.

There are no direct flights to Cambodia from the UK, but good connections are available from major Asian destinations. You can fly with Thai Airways to Bangkok, Malaysian Airlines to Kuala Lumpur or British Airways via Hong Kong. From there you can take the budget airline Air Asia or Dragon Air. The total journey time, excluding transit, is about 15 hours.

When to go The climate in Vietnam and Cambodia remains tropical. The best time to visit the region is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April-May and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
