Family Holiday: Tarangire National Park

Family Holiday: Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park, Tanzania, is located in the Manyara Region, north of the country. Tarangire is most famous for its elephant migration and bird watching safaris. The Tarangire River, cuts through the park before it empties itself into the Lake Burungi, in the North West. It is also the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire National Park, especially during the dry season.

This Tanzania Family Safari begins in Arusha and takes the Northern Circuit that includes Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area and Serengeti National Parks. Then transfer to baobab studded landscape of the Tarangire National Park that boasts magnificent herds of elephant and other species of wildlife. This is a private tour, customised to your specific requirements. Wildlife includes herds of up to 300 elephants, migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland.

Family Holiday: Tarangire National Park Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire
(7 Days – Travel Any Day)

Day 01 – Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Lake Manyara National Park You are collected from your hotel in Arusha for transfer to Lake Manyara National Park.

Stay one night at the Kirurumu Tented Lodge, set high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, enjoying a marvellous, uplifting and panoramic view eastward over Lake Manyara, the Rift floor and Mt. Losimingori. Behind Kirurumu, the Ngorongoro Highlands rise in green and fertile splendour and form the gateway to Ngorongoro Crater and, finally, Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti and our own 200 sq. km. game-rich Loliondo Concession which immediately borders the Serengeti. Enjoy an afternoon game drive in the park.

Day 02 – Safari
Serengeti National Park Enjoy morning game drive. After lunch, you will have a road transfer to Serengeti National Park. Looking out over the seemingly endless Serengeti plains, this hillside lodge is a tranquil oasis set in over 14,000 sq kms (5,000 sq miles) of National Park. The Serengeti plains are host to a dramatic annual migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and numerous other species of animals indigenous to the area. Enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Park.

Day 03 – Safari
Serengeti National Park Enjoy a full day of game viewing activities in the Serengeti National Park. During the migrations, the wildebeests move first, then the zebras. Lions, hyenas and scavenger birds follow and feast on the sick, young, old or weary. More than 3 million animals move south from mid November to January, then north again from the end of May to June - though there is some variation in the dates, depending on the level of rainfall during a given year.

Day 04 – Transfer & Safari
Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area After your morning game, road transfer to Ngorongoro Crater with picnic lunch at Olduvai Gorge. Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 3,100 square miles of pristine African wilderness.

Day 05 – Safari
Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area Enjoy a full day of exploration in the Crater. This extinct volcano offers, in our opinion, the finest wildlife viewing in Africa. Its combination of abundant animals (including rare species such as black rhinos and cheetahs) and awesome scenery will impress even a seasoned safari traveller. The completely intact rim of the crater rises 1,800 ft/600 m above the floor, which is 12 mi/19 km across (102 sq mi/264 sq km). With the passage of time, the floor of the crater has become grassland with a lake in the middle, and it has a high concentration of hippos, elephants, lions, jackals, wildebeests, hyenas, zebras, elands, Cape buffalo and a wide assortment of colourful birds, including a large flock of flamingos.

Day 06 – Transfer & Safari
Tarangire National Park After breakfast, you will have a road transfer to Tarangire National Park. Enjoy lunch at the lodge and afternoon game drive in the park. Completing the Northern Tanzania safari circuit, the lodge, built as a 'low profile' structure, nestles into a wooded hillside valley overlooking Tarangire Hill.

Situated 120km (75 miles) from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is easily accessible and boasts magnificent herds of elephant and other species of wildlife. The baobab studded landscape also plays host to a vast variety of resident and migratory bird life. Looking out over the rolling countryside the lodge is a tranquil oasis set in over 2,600 sq kms (900 sq miles) of National Park. The Tarangire flows north to south year-round and sustains an abundance of fauna and flora rarely seen elsewhere.

Getting There There are regular flights to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (near Arusha) from South Africa, Europe and the United States. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is situated 46km/29mi east of Arusha, the starting point for Tanzania's most popular Northern Safari Circuit. Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km west of town.

From either airport, you can catch an internal flight to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar and most other destinations in Tanzania. Tanzania's main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) located 13km southwest of Dar es Salaam. The latter is the entry-point for visitors to the southern parks and Zanzibar.

When to go January to March: The best time to visit the Serengeti when the grazers are calving. These are also the warmest months. April and May: This is the 'green season' with lush vegetation, full rivers and lakes, and abundant birdlife and wild flowers, as well as baby animals. Best to avoid, as ‘long rains’ can be heavy and can make unsealed road travel difficult.

June to October (dry season): These are the coolest months when the weather is less humid, but still warm. It's a good time for game viewing and ideal for walking safaris, as animals start to congregate around shrinking water sources. The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is from August to October that usually takes place after the long rains. November onwards (rainy season): Things get increasingly wet and sticky. Whale shark season is October to March.
