Mombo Camp is located on the northern tip of Chief's Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators, providing arguably the best big game viewing in all of Africa. Mombo Camp is built under large shady trees and comprises nine spacious tents raised off the ground. The tent interiors are elegantly furnished with polished parquet floors, complete with an outdoor thatched sala.
Renowned as one of the best game areas in Africa, the Mombo Camp is a predator haven with frequent excellent sightings of Lion, Leopard. Wild Dog can be seen and inter-predator interaction is a feature. Plains game is prolific – Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Giraffe and all the delta antelope are present in numbers. Year-round birding is superb.
This abundance and variety of wildlife owes much to Mombo Camp's positioning on the ecotone between east and west Okavango Delta. Between March and May, when the waters come, large mammals move into the Chief's Island area, which contains rich resources of grass and Acacia woodland. By September and October when the waters begin to recede, it leaves vast floodplains of green grass. This is the secret to the amazing diversity and quantity of wildlife in the Mombo region.
Mombo Camp MOREMI GAME RESERVE, OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Stay Mombo Camp is a Premier Safari Lodge with nine luxurious guest tents with two twin beds in each tent. Custom made linen enables twin beds to be converted into a king-sized bed on request in all tents. Luxury tented rooms have thatched roof and en suite bathroom facilities with a separate toilet, and an outside shower. Rooms have ceiling fan, a safe and a sala. Each unit is on raised decks overlooking the surrounding plains.
The Camp
The Mombo Camp is located deep within Moremi Game Reserve, beneath huge trees on the edge of a scenic floodplain. The main area has a dining room, lounge and bar under thatch and is connected with raised walkways to Little Mombo main camp. An open air boma is used for dining under the stars. There is a gym area and two plunge pools. Massage treatments (at an additional cost) can be conducted in the privacy of the guest’s tent.
ChildCare Children of 6 years and older are welcome to stay at the Mombo Camp. For families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years, private activities need to be booked and paid for. Children between 6 and 16 years must share with an adult/s in the same room.
Safari The Mombo Camp undertakes 100% Game drives. No water activities although guests will see water in the area at times. The main activity here is game drives via 4 x 10-seater open 4 x 4 Land Rovers each accommodating maximum six guests, allowing all guests an outside seat. Reference books available in each guest tent for use on drives. Binoculars and insect repellent are available on each row of seats. Private vehicle is available on request.
Experience Birdlife is prolific around Mombo Camp, with waterfowl like African Jacana, Pygmy-Geese, massive Goliath Heron and migrant waders in summer being particularly common. Hippo hide located 20 minutes from camp.
Location The Mombo Camp, northern Botswana is located in Central Okavango Delta. It is at the northern tip of Chief’s Island Moremi Game Reserve on Mombo Island. It is a smaller and more intimate camp than its sister, Mombo Camp, to which it is connected via a raised walkway.
Getting There Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, which is best reached from Johannesburg by a 2-hour international flight. From Maun, Okavango Delta is accessed by a short 30 min flight on a light aircraft, followed by a 15-minute drive to the Mombo Camp. Please note, light aircraft transfers have 15kg luggage restrictions in soft, squashable bags.
When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. This is also its high season. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round. There is great fishing from March to December, with catches of tiger fish, bream, catfish and tilapia.
