Designed by internationally-renowned Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, and conceived by acclaimed luxury hotelier Alex Vik, Playa Vik is an embodiment of contemporary luxury in physical form. This avant-garde beach house, like a mini Guggenheim museum Bilbao is one of the principal reasons Uruguay has begun to register on the global radar.
Set above the golden sands of Playa Mansa, Playa Vik has four light-filled suites, housed in a titanium-and-glass-clad building dubbed Sculpture. In the surrounds are six two- and three-bedroom casitas, walled in glass and roofed with sea grasses. Public spaces are filled with artworks including Zaha Hadid-designed moulded acrylic bench, and a wall of pulsating light by Californian artist James Turrell in a dining area overlooking the beach and serving exquisite contemporary cuisine.
Located steps from Jose Ignacio’s iconic lighthouse, El Canuto stocks an impeccable collection of beachwear and handmade jewellery in a beautiful rustic environment. Nearby on Playa Brava beach, models in string bikinis and their oglers abound. Closer to Playa Vik, Playa Mansa, is much quieter and the best place to watch the sunset. In the town, Mutate sells a curated mix of men and women’s clothing, vintage accessories and trinkets. Stop for coffee at Café de la place.
