Fasano Las Piedras is a modern countryside resort, set four miles inland from the coastal resort of La Barra on the Uruguay’s south coast. São Paulo-based restaurateur-hotelier Rogério Fasano has ventured outside Brazil by setting up a hotel near Punta del Este, Uruguay's uber-rich 'gated city'. Award-winning Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld designed the concrete structure, integrating 490 hectares of countryside’s subtle folds and the sea in a unique way.
Set within the bunker-style building, Fasano Las Piedras features 32 bungalows. All are elegantly designed with clean, angular lines, jute sofas, sheepskin rugs and a neutral palette of earthy tones, wood panelling and contemporary touches. There are two on-site restaurants, one carved from a granite-ringed grotto and another set in a century-old farmhouse, both offering gourmet Italian cuisine. Outside, is a spring-fed rock swimming pool and a spa with 180 degrees views.
Two must-do activities during your stay at the Fasano Las Piedras include riding and golf. Fasano has its own Equestrian Centre that features a sand lane for jumping practice and offers riding classes and has a Polo Field, excellent for matches and taqueio. Nearby is the Arnold Palmer-designed Links golf course, integrated into the region’s breathtaking nature. There is also a Golf Club House set in a former train wagon with an outdoor deck with tables offering snacks and drinks.

When to go November to March is the ideal time to visit weather wise. The very popular peak summer season from Christmas to mid-February gets booked up well in advance so best to plan early. During this period the whole place comes alive and there is a great party atmosphere. It is worth bearing in mind however that during the quieter season - including November, many of the area's bars and restaurants are closed which does tend to restrict eating options to your hotel.
