Charco Hotel is housed in original Portuguese houses dating back to 17th-century, set in the heart of Uruguay's UNESCO World Heritage site, Colonia del Sacramento. All have been sensitively designed retaining the charm and history of these original fisherman’s houses. Located beside the picturesque river, in the heart of old Colonia and within walking distance from the port, it serves as an ideal base from which to explore this charming city’s historic sites, restaurants and its nightlife.

There are just eight rooms within several houses with terracotta tiled roofs. All have a chic white décor, complimenting natural stone walls, wood furnishings and rich textiles. The style is a mix of classic art deco and contemporary boutique; furnished with plush beds, sofas and rugs in earthy tones. All rooms are different is size and include a spacious balcony room and three suites. The El Rancho, is a two-bedroom house with a spacious lounge, kitchen and terrace. 

Gourmet meals are served in Charco Hotel’s charming bistro restaurant, set along the river, serving traditional dishes and international favourites. Take a stroll along the harbour and visit its 19th-century El Faro lighthouse, known for its special shape and design. One day, explore the old town with its churches and colonial buildings and experience its vibrant café scene. A must-visit in Colonia del Sacramento is the local wineries, though located outside the city, they are worth seeing.

Charco Hotel Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay

Stay Charco Hotel has seven rooms and one suite. These are set in renovated fisherman's houses dating back to 17th-Century, but retaining its original charm and history. All rooms are painted white; wooden-beamed ceilings, furniture and bathrooms, though some have stone walls, and polished floors partially covered with rugs. The décor is simple but contemporary in style with all mod cons and plush beds draped in fine cotton sheets. The El Rancho is a self-contained family house with two bedrooms, large living room, kitchen and shared bathroom.

ChildCare Families with children are welcome to stay at Charco Hotel but there are no specific facilities or interconnecting rooms available. However, there is one room with twin beds which is making it an ideal option for families, or El Rancho house which is a family unit with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Babysitting service can be arranged, on request.

Dine For dining, Charco Hotel has a small bistro with wonderful views of the river. Gourmet meals range from Tenderloin wrap and confit chicken to grilled tenderloin or salmon. These are served with fresh organic vegetables and salads and paired with local Carmelo and Uruguayan wines. Don’t miss out on its delicious deserts; Cream caramel volcano or the favourite cheesecake.

Relax Keeping in line with the UNESCO World Heritage rules, Charco Hotel cannot make major changes in the property which means there is no swimming pool or gymnasium. However, there ample places to relax inside and outside the hotel. Being close to the river, it is perfect place for a leisurely stroll along the river bed. 

Experience The picturesque town of Colonia del Sacramento, lying on the Río de la Plata, is the oldest city in Uruguay and is now a UNESCO World Culture Heritage Site. Charco Hotel, housed in one of its protected properties is a perfect base from which to explore this historical city. Take a stroll to the nearby 18th-century Old Town Gate, or Church Matriz, considered the oldest in Uruguay. Visit the amazing Museum Granja Arenas showcasing thousands of graphic pencils and perfume bottles.

Getting there One hour by ferry from Buenos Aires and a five minute taxi ride, or ten minute walk from the port to the hotel.

When to go October to April is the ideal time to visit weather wise. The very popular peak summer season from Christmas to mid-February gets booked up well in advance so it's best to plan early.
