Casa Ana is a small boutique hotel in Uruguay's tiny village of Garzon, a short drive from Jose Ignacio. Conceived by London based art dealer Martin Summers as a winter escape in Southern Hemisphere, it was designed by a local Argentine-born architect, Diego Montero. For the Martins “it was important to keep the old look” so the 650 sqm house was designed keeping the area’s vernacular architecture, and yet allowing each guest to retain a sense of privacy and individuality.
From outside Casa Ana looks like a single brick building but inside are a series of linked but independent structures housing six bedrooms. All rooms are furnished with locally made wrought-iron beds, cabinets designed by local artisans and stones on the fireplaces, brought from a nearby quarry. Outside, the half-acre lawn is scattered with rocks and purple agapanthus. At its centre, is a slightly elevated round deck with armchairs facing the hills.
Located within the Casa Ana gardens is a pool with lounge chairs and an open thatched roof hut with a vintage-looking wet bar, that can easily take about 100 guests. In the surrounds is a beautiful countryside with olive groves and vineyards worth exploring on a horse or mountain bike. Farther afield, a day trip to nearby Jose Ignacio reveals some of Uruguay’s remarkable beaches and lagoons, ideal for picnics, paragliding and windsurfing. Nearby is a quite countryside for birdwatching.
