Kathmandu Experience

Kathmandu, is the largest city in the Himalayan Range and the capital of Nepal. At the heart of the city is Durbar Square, around which are Hanuman Dhoka Durbars, the Royal Palace complex of the Malla and Shah kings, who ruled over the city. Lalitpur city, or Patan in the central-south of Kathmandu Valley is known for its fine ancient art, of making metallic and stone carving statues. East of the city, Bhaktapur, is an ancient Newar city, known for it rich culture, temples and crafts.

Standing on a hill is Swayambhu, an ancient stupa on top of which two giant Buddha eyes look out over the Kathmandu valley. In the northeast, along the ancient trade route from Tibet, Boudhanath stupa, the largest in the world, dominates the skyline. Pashupatinath Temple, sacred to Hindus, serves as the seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. Changu Narayan, the ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Visnu is considered as the oldest temple in the history of Nepal.

Getting There Kathmandu has an international airport and is easily accessed via flights with Jet Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa. On arrival, you can exchange your money at a bank just before immigration. Nearby is the visa counter where you can pay for your visa if you haven't got one already. While departing, for an international flight check-in at least two hours before departure, if not earlier as the counter gets busy during high season.

When to go Nepal like the rest of the Gangetic plains has four seasons. The winter in the Himalayas is cold but beginning February, the weather gets warmer and trekkers find forests full of rhododendrons and other flowers in bloom. The heat wave runs through May until the monsoon finally arrives in mid-June. But in September, when the rains stop, the weather is balmy, the air is crisp and the sky is clear; it is the most perfect time to visit Nepal. Visitors, trekkers and mountaineers are rewarded with gorgeous uninterrupted views of the high Himalayas.
