Great Wildebeest Migration Safari: Tanzania & Kenya

Kenya, Tanzania

Great Wildebeest Migration Safari

East African safaris offers a wild world with stays in luxury camps and lodges. Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara host the annual Great Migration, a continuous migration of huge herds of wildebeest and zebras as they seek fresh pastures and water, following the annual rains. In Kenya's northern regions, one can see the endangered black rhino, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, Grevy's zebra and the long-necked gerenuk.

This East African safari features Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater along with Serengeti National Park in Tanzania before travelling to Masai Mara in Kenya. The Masai Mara National Reserve is well known for its abundance of big cats. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are regularly spotted on game drives. This exclusive tour starts in Arusha, Tanzania and finishes in Nairobi, Kenya. Accommodation is in some of the most luxurious and historic safari lodges or tented camps.

Day 03 & 04 – Safari
Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities, including shared morning or afternoon game drives in the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater floor’s open grassland habitat supports resident herds of grazing herbivores and their attendant predators. The soda-rich Lake Magadi on the Crater floor attracts flamingos and other wading birds, while ducks and other waterfowl favour freshwater ponds.

Day 05 – Transfer
Serengeti National Park Return transfer to Manyara Airstrip to board your flight to Serengeti National Park. The word "Serengeti" comes from the Masai word siringet, which literally means "an extended area." Because the park covers 5,000 sq mi/12,950 sq km of grassland (broken by rock outcroppings and stands of acacia trees), it's an excellent place to observe animal migrations. Three overnights at Grumeti River Camp or Kleins Camp in luxury tents with en suite shower, hand basin and private toilet. Grumeti River Camp is situated in a remote valley in the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park, just 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of Lake Victoria – Africa’s largest lake. Klein’s Camp is situated deep in the heart of the game-rich northern Serengeti in Tanzania – right off the beaten tourist track.

Day 06 & 07 – Safari
Serengeti National Park Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities, including shared morning or afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park. During the migrations, the wildebeests move first, then the zebras. Lions, hyenas and scavenger birds follow and feast on the sick, young, old or weary. More than 3 million animals move south from mid November to January, then north again from the end of May to June - though there is some variation in the dates, depending on the level of rainfall during a given year.

Day 09 & 10 – Safari
Masai Mara Game Reserve Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities, including shared morning or afternoon game drives in Masai Mara National Park. Discover the Masai Mara on interpretive morning and afternoon game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles. Fascinating night game-drives in the private concession will reveal a host of interesting nocturnal creatures. Interpretive bush walks led by highly skilled guides and traditionally-attired Maasai naturalists, wilderness walks along the Mara River and up the Oloololo Escarpment – one of the ‘steps’ of the Great Rift Valley – will bring you face-to-face with wild Africa at its best. Daily lectures by a Maasai naturalist and visits to a Maasai cultural village offer an incredible insight into the fascinating lives of the brilliantly-clad Maasai people.

When to go Game viewing is at its best in mid-summer after the rainy season has ended. The days will be long and the weather pleasant. The best month is probably July.

The main rainy seasons are from April to May (the long rains) and October to December (the short rains). Rainfall is seldom continuous over long periods and normally falls in the late afternoon preceded by bright sunny and fresh days. The Rift Valley and Central Highlands enjoy a temperate climate year round although the temperatures vary from the hot and relatively dry floor of the Rift valley to arctic on the peaks of Mt Kenya.
