Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Siem Reap, Hong Kong
Southeast Asia is a wonderful destination for family travel, and this private tour features the best of the region, including extraordinary cultural sites, great food, fascinating cities, incredible hotels and resorts, and activities family members of all ages can enjoy. This is one of our favourite tours for families visiting Southeast Asia but we encourage families to create your own itinerary based on your preference.
Begin in Bangkok, Thailand, one of Asia’s great cities. During flexible touring with your private guide, explore the city according to your family’s interests. Some of our favourite family-friendly activities in Bangkok include riding a long-tail boat on the picturesque Chao Phraya River and klongs (canals) to see the serene family houses and temples along the waterways that give this city the name ‘Venice of the East’. Other activities include a Thai puppet show or dance performance, learning about the Thai silk industry, or perhaps watching a muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) tournament.
Next, fly to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, and stay at a luxurious resort built in traditional Thai style that has serene views of rice fields and mountains. With your private guide, visit the best local markets and tour interesting Buddhist temples, including one on top of a mountain. Perhaps ride on the back of an elephant, one of Thailand’s national symbols, during an excursion to an elephant training camp. During free time, enjoy your resort’s many facilities or opt for activities such as river rafting or hiking.
Next, fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia and visit some of the most impressing and breathtaking pieces of history in the world – the temples of Angkor. See the monumental magnificence of Angkor Thom (Great City) – the last capital of the Khmers, with its Elephant Terrace, the Leper King Terrace and the stunning Bayon temple. This 12th century masterpiece at the very centre of Angkor Thom is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. Also visit Banteay Srei, a petite temple with elaborate carvings in pink sandstone, and other lesser-known temples.
If desired, enjoy special activities customized to your family’s interests, such as riding bikes to temples and local villages, a private Khmer cooking class, visiting children's centres, touring local villages, visiting traditional Cambodian art centres, a helicopter ride to remote jungle temples, or attending traditional Khmer dance performances. Another option is an excursion to Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake and an ecological wonder. Cruise through the flooded forest to learn about the Tonle Sap ecosystem and spot birds and other wildlife.
Next, fly to Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most attractive and exciting cities. During touring with your expert private guide, ride the Peak Tram to the top of Hong Kong Island, dine on dim sum at teahouses, explore local markets to learn about traditional Chinese medicine and unusual food products, and ride in a traditional sampan boat across Aberdeen Harbour. Opt to visit Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park, a favourite local theme park, or go for a hike together in the lush green hills of the New Territories. Throughout your stay in Hong Kong, enjoy unbeatable views across Victoria Harbour from your luxurious room in the city’s finest hotel.

Getting There There are no direct flights to Cambodia from the UK, but good connections are available from major Asian destinations. You can fly with Thai Airways to Bangkok, Malaysian Airlines to Kuala Lumpur or British Airways via Hong Kong. From there you can take the budget airline Air Asia or Dragon Air. The total journey time, excluding transit, is about 15 hours.
From Phnom Penh you can take direct flights to Siem Reap, which now operates on daily basis. Direct one-hour flights are now also available from Bangkok.
In Thailand, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport is the country's major gateway. Practically every airline carrier that flies to Asia also flies into Bangkok. This means there are plenty of services and the competition on the routes helps to keep the ticket prices down.
When to go The climate in Cambodia and Thailand remains tropical. The best time to visit the region is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April-May and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
