Chitwan Park Jungle Safari & Kathmandu

Nepal Jungle safari is generally taken in the Chitwan National Park, in the Terai Lowlands of south-central Nepal. Excursions in the park can be taken on 4 x 4 and elephant safaris, boat rides and forest walks. Field trips are guided by naturalists made up mostly of trained locals. On a good day trip, you may see various species of birds, including crested serpent eagles and majestic hornbills, as well as one-horned rhinos, deer and Terai gray langurs. But keep your eyes peeled for leopards and Bengal tigers.

Jungle safari to Chitwan Park is generally taken as a side trip from Kathmandu during or after your adventure tour in the Himalayas. Bharatpur Airport is an hour’s drive from the park. A number of luxury safari lodges are set just outside the park. Meghauli Serai, the new Taj property is the most luxurious safari lodge in the country. Built on a wide expanse of the Rapti River floodplain, its 16 earthtoned villas are partly hidden by wild grass and designed for spying on the surrounding wildlife.

Getting There Kathmandu has an international airport and is easily accessed via flights with Jet Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa. On arrival, you can exchange your money at a bank just before immigration. Nearby is the visa counter where you can pay for your visa if you haven't got one already. While departing, for an international flight check-in at least two hours before departure, if not earlier as the counter gets busy during high season.

When to go Nepal like the rest of the Gangetic plains has four seasons. The winter in the Himalayas is cold but beginning February, the weather gets warmer and trekkers find forests full of rhododendrons and other flowers in bloom. The heat wave runs through May until the monsoon finally arrives in mid-June. But in September, when the rains stop, the weather is balmy, the air is crisp and the sky is clear; it is the most perfect time to visit Nepal. Visitors, trekkers and mountaineers are rewarded with gorgeous uninterrupted views of the high Himalayas.
