Best of Thailand & Laos Holiday

In Thailand and Laos, Buddhist temples are known as "wats", and have an enclosing wall that divides it from the secular world. Wat architecture has seen many changes over time but they all adhere to the same principles. In Laos, temple architectural styles differ with geographical location. Thus Luang Prabang temples differ quite markedly in style from those of Vientiane. Ornamented multiple tiers is reserved for roofs on temples both in Thailand and Laos.

This Thailand and Laos tour combines the best of Bangkok, Luang Prabang, capital of Laos and Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Bangkok has over 30,000 Buddhist temples in current use. Visit the most unusual Buddhist temples, the Chedis of the Kings and the invaluable golden Buddha weighing over 5 tons. After touring Luang Prabang in Laos, end tour in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. Explore its historic Buddhist wats (temples) and the royal family’s Winter Palace. Chiang Mai has some of the best cooking schools in Thailand.

Begin in Bangkok. With your private guide explore Bangkok’s most unusual Buddhist temples, the Chedis of the Kings and the invaluable golden Buddha weighing over 5 tons. Set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the town and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture - reminders of when Laos was part of the French colony of Indochine.

With your own expert guide and driver, visit golden-roofed wats (temples), decorated with mosaics and murals of the life of Buddha. Explore markets, visit hill tribe villages, meet silk weavers and contemporary textile designers, and take a memorable cruise on the Mekong, visiting craft villages and caves filled with Buddha statues. Upon request, we are also happy to incorporate special touring such as hiking, biking, kayaking, a cooking class, a visit to a private home, photography excursions, attending alms processions, an elephant-back excursion in the jungle, and more.

Next, spend several days in Chiang Mai,in northern Thailand. Stay at one of Asia’s most luxurious and atmospheric resorts, surrounded by mountains and lush fields of terraced rice paddies. Getting There There are only three international airports in Laos. Wattay International Airport in Vientiane; Luang Prabang International airport and Pakse International airport. Lao Airlines is the national carrier and monopolises the majority of flights in and out of the country, though many code-share with other air carriers.

In Thailand, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport is the country's major gateway. Practically every airline carrier that flies to Asia also flies into Bangkok. This means there are plenty of services and the competition on the routes helps to keep the ticket prices down.

When to go The climate in Laos and Cambodia remains tropical. The best time to visit the region is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April-May and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
