Tubu Tree Camp

Tubu Tree is a small camp built on the western side of the Jao Concession's isolated Hunda Island. Owing to its locale and easy access to diverse habitats, Tubu Tree ensures varied and spectacular game viewing. Elevated walkways through the canopy link the traditional style camp with eight secluded tents on raised platforms, taking in the marvellous scenery of the surrounding floodplain. The main dining, lounge areas and pool are also raised offering commanding views of the wonderful scenery, while an open bar area is shaded by the canopy of a large marula tree.

The area is a combination of open grasslands, dry forest and shallow floodplains. In the dry season lechwe, tsessebe, elephant, wildebeest and zebra are prevalent, with lion, cheetah and leopard often sighted. The many lion prides in this area have been extensively studied in recent years, thereby building up a more intimate knowledge of their behaviour. A trip to Tubu Tree Camp is an absolute must for bird enthusiasts.

The main activity here is the game drives in open 4 x 4 Land Rovers. All vehicles are equipped with books on trees, birds and mammals along with a pair of binoculars and Peaceful Sleep insect repellent. Night drives are undertaken with spotlight. Mokoro rides (normally May to late September) on 7 x 2-seater mokoro. Boating on 12-seater boat is subject to water levels. Fishing is on a catch and release basis.

Tubu Tree Camp Okavango Delta and Moremi, Botswana

Location The Tubu Tree Camp is located in the Jao Concession, on Hunda Island, which is in the West of the Okavango Delta, bordering Moremi Game Reserve. Usually a water-inundated area during the floods, Hunda Island is the largest stretch of dry land in the area. This affords Tubu Tree Camp the most diverse game viewing within the concession, from the water-loving lechwe to blue wildebeest of the plains.

Getting There Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, which is best reached from Johannesburg by a 2-hour international flight. A short flight in light aircraft from Maun to camp. Please note, light aircraft transfers have 15kg luggage restrictions in soft, squashable bags.

When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. This is also its high season. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round. There is great fishing from March to December, with catches of tiger fish, bream, catfish and tilapia.
