Kalahari Plains Camp


Kalahari Plains Camp lies in a remote part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a place famed for its outstanding wildlife with vast herds of antelope followed by abundant predators, including the legendary black-maned Kalahari lions. The camp comprises of ten en-suite canvas units, raised off the ground to take in the sweeping views across the Kalahari. The lounge and dining area has a separate swimming pool and deck. 

This part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve offers year-round viewing of key desert-adapted wildlife. Summer is spectacular with huge concentrations of plains game followed by predators such as lion and cheetah. General herbivore species seen are gemsbok (oryx), springbok, red hartebeest, grey duiker and steenbok. Brown hyaena and even caracal are occasionally seen, while a host of smaller predators include meerkats (suricates), Cape fox and honey badger. 

Guided game drives and walks unlock the wildlife treasures found here and San Bushman experiences provide insights into the unique culture of this people. Over 220 bird species can be seen in the Kalahari Game Reserve area, with regionally threatened species like Kori Bustard and Lappet-faced Vulture and arid west endemic species such as Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Grey-backed Sparrowlark, Kalahari Scrub-Robin and African Wren-Warbler.

Stay Kalahari Plains Camp is an adventure safari camp with 10 luxurious tents with a capacity for 20 guests. There are two family tents which comprise of 2 bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom on a shared deck but each with its own entrance off the deck. Each raised unit in Kalahari Plains Camp includes a down stairs shaded veranda and an up-stairs roof top veranda - allowing good views over the pan and plains. There is also a sleep-out deck above each unit to enjoy the night skies. 

The Camp The Kalahari Plains Camp’s main area comprises of a lounge, dining area and bar under canvas canopy all with ceiling fans. There is a swimming pool and deck area, all raised off the ground to take in the view of the surrounding area. Electricity is provided by solar energy with a back-up generator, if required.

ChildCare Children over the age of 6 years are welcome to stay at the Kalahari Plains Camp and partake in activities with all other guests. A minimum age of 13 years is required for walking activities (subject to availability) and sleep-outs.

Safari The main activity at the Kalahari Plains Camp is the game drives via 4 x 4 Land Rovers each accommodating maximum six guests, allowing all guests an outside seat. All vehicles are equipped with books on trees, birds and mammals along with a pair of binoculars. Game walks offered by the camp are based on walking permit that restrict walking to a 3km radius of camp – this includes two large remote pans which attract both wildlife and birds. 

Experience Bushman Walks in the Kalahari Plains with San Bushman offer the best walking experience anywhere in Botswana. These are led by Kalahari Plains Camp staff members who are descendants of the San Bushmen. The experience enables an understanding of how the San Bushmen lived and survived in the harsh Kalahari Desert as well as gaining an insight in to the ancient San culture and their humble and gentle approach amongst the family units and with the environment.

Location The Kalahari Plains Camp is located in the Northern sector of Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana and about 20km from Deception Valley. This is a very special part of Botswana, and indeed Africa. It is home to a greater diversity of wildlife than anywhere else on the continent, and is a land of ancient people: the San Bushman, and varied dramatic landscapes.

Getting There Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and is accessed by a short 1 hour and 15 min flight on a light aircraft. Transfer time from airstrip to camp is about 30 minutes by road. There is a luggage restriction on this flight of 10kg (22lbs) per person, soft sided luggage. The Kalahari Plains Camp can also be accessed by 4x4 vehicles but accommodation reservations must be made prior to entry into the Reserve.

When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. This is also its high season. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round.
